View Full Version : How much do you expect to pay ?
EvHosting 11-22-2003, 08:04 AM hi,
i was wondering what you would expect to pay for the following
2x servers with the following specs
1GHz
1GB ram
120GB hdd (IDE, 7200rpm, 8meg cache,ATA 100)
Dual NIC's (1 connected to the internet, the other to the other server)
both servers having slackware 9 or redhat 9 or gentoo
both servers share a 2mbps connection or 5mbps with another 2 pairs of these servers
each server has 2 ip's
any idea's on a price range for these ?
give an idea of setup fee and monthly price
thanks,

akashik 11-22-2003, 08:12 AM $200 a month (based on processor). That would depend vastly on the datacenter of course. Half the price for those DC's with no support and poor connectivity. |
EvHosting 11-22-2003, 08:34 AM hi,
thanks for your reply
well the servers will be located at 100% or 99.9% guranteed uptime datacenters (3 datacenters to chose from)
with live (MSN,YAHOO,IRC,ICQ,AIM) and email support
what part of this configuration is most likely to slow down the rest of the system ? and what should it be to stop this effect ?
also which connection would you chose ?
2mbps dedicated or 5mbps shared ?
thanks,

UH-Matt 11-22-2003, 08:57 AM Im not sure I like the idea of a DC which uses MSN,YAHOO,ETC as a form of support? Seems a little unprofessional to me. Fair enough if you know someone their who uses MSN. But for a DC to expect its staff to communicate with hundreds of customers via that method seems bizarre, no? |
EvHosting 11-22-2003, 09:10 AM hi,
we provide MSN,YAHOO,IRC,ICQ,AIM because unless you have a chat applet embedded in your website there is no truely live way to comunicate with the clients
it also helps with advertising
new deals can be brought right to them via thier buddy list
problem with email support is
its slow it takes a long time to write an email and you have to put in lots of questions to make it efficient
if you have a better idea of how to provide truely "live" customer support i would love to hear it
also if you know anything else those servers could do with let me know

UH-Matt 11-22-2003, 09:11 AM How about a livesupport script?
Example: www.phplivesupport.com |
EvHosting 11-22-2003, 09:27 AM hi
ok so thats another $20/month to add to the cost we must pass onto our customers
if we provide support on most of the IM protocols and email support which are all "FREE" and keep the cost down for our customers
would your customers rather use MSN/YAHOO/IRC/ICQ/AIM for free or pay extra to use a webpage just because you want to use 1 form of comunication only ?
i know you will probably be happy to pass on this fee and add a little extra for yourself to your customers and they probably dont mind
but at EvHosting we find it easier to use programs users already have installed (look at XP it comes with MSN pre-installed) and if they are on linux well IRC is more likely (and now AIM with netscape)

UH-Matt 11-22-2003, 09:31 AM Well its all upto you how you plan the infrastructure of your business and support.
Personally I wouldnt expect to pass on the costs of such necessary tools onto my customers. They would expect the company to be financially stable enough to be able to afford a $20 purchase each month especially if it was a company running from a "100% or 99.9% guranteed uptime datacenter" |
eddy2099 11-22-2003, 09:34 AM One of the limiting factor is the 1ghz CPU. Is this AMD, Celeron, P3 based ? Currently, it is common to get faster CPU.
The 2mbit line can be limiting for some. For most purposes, we might not get that but most other competitors are offering at least 10mbit line.
So far, for support, I use emails and online ticket but those are good if both your network and mine are accessible. What if the server goes down for some reason and that brings down the email server, the online chats and so on. That is when having a phone number to call would give them some assurance that they can contact you. |
EvHosting 11-22-2003, 09:56 AM for the CPU we are looking into what type to get
it will be 1GHz or above the servers dont cost much so we can rent them out very cheaply
this is why i wish to know how much you think you could pay
we are looking at VIA C3 processors Celerons possibly AMD's (P4's are not an option)
we could provide 10mbps but this would cost a lot more as bandwidth makes up most of the monthly cost
the actual space cost has been reduced so that it adds very little to the price (less than $10/pair of servers/month)
if you have a better idea for the speed range we are open to suggestions as we are having a custom set of servers made
all parts used in these servers are new (not "as new" really "new")
servers are provided in pairs for better performance the lan cable connecting the 2 we have configured to sync the files between drives
if there is anything else you would like to see on these servers (specs wise) or increase in some part of them post a reply and we can investigate it
once we finalize a design the servers could be available within 2 weeks
if you would like to order one or want more info send me an IM or EMAIL
support is provided from multiple world wide locations so even if the servers loses its connections you can still get support
