View Full Version : Which host is bigger?
TomSmith 09-12-2001, 09:13 AM bigger as in more hosting clients...
www.*****.com say they have 105,000 clients
www.site-host.com say they have 98,000 clients
Are these the two biggest companies?
Does anyone know the true figures of these two ? and whos bigger?
thanks!
DanielP 09-12-2001, 12:42 PM Those numbers are very inflated, You have to look at more than just how many clients a company hosts..
The # of clients they host could be based in accounts from all of the dedicated servers resellers and their virtuals......
You need to look at more than just the size of a company, look at quality, cost and speed of support.
WildWayz 09-12-2001, 03:43 PM and without kissing ass too much, Ventures Online kicks both their asses for support :)

And Ventures Online has how many clients?
DanielP 09-12-2001, 03:55 PM I don't see why that would be relevant in this thread. If you want to inquire about that then you can contact me directly, as to not throw this thread off track.
bbrader 09-12-2001, 04:15 PM I believe that pair.com is bigger than both.

UmBillyCord 09-12-2001, 05:16 PM site-host is an Alabanza reseller (at least they still advertise the Alabanza CP). There is no way they have almost 100,000 sites. Last I heard Jumpline was the biggest Alabanza customer.

I second that!
Both of these companies have really really messed up ways of counting clients.
First of all, they figure that every domain name that is purchased, every domain that is parked, every site they host (or hosted), every email they receive...is based as a customer
So you see, in reality....i think ***** has around 12,000 clients and that may even be inflated.
As far as site-host goes, if they are a reseller, they simply cannot have over 100,000 customers. If they had 100,000 customers, wouldnt you think they would have their own data center. I mean, 100,000 people, is more than 500 servers (each server holding 200 sites).
Its just so far off that a host could be a reseller and have over 100,000 clients.
Jim
purplemokey 09-13-2001, 07:05 AM They have signed up over 100,000 clients over three and a half years but they define "clients" very broad.
***** Signs up 100,000th Client in Less than Three and a Half Years

Walter 09-13-2001, 10:03 AM There is a difference between customers / accounts / domains. One customer can have 3 accounts with each 5 domains.

What do you think: how many server do qualify for an own NOC? Just an example, as far as I know VO has more than 100 servers and don't have their own NOC, they just colocate at a Verio NOC.
BTW, It would be very interesting to hear which NOC is the biggest and how many servers there are...
PaulC-ehosting 09-13-2001, 10:12 AM thats very interesting about ***** only having about 12,000 clients, I guess your right about the way you count it.
but looking on site-host.com they say they have 98,000 customers, not domains, they also say they have there own NOC and show photos of it on there site?
its not their NOC, ive seen those pictures before.
Jim
One post above used the language "signed up their 100,000th customer...". The first thing I think of is when a store says, "You are our 1 millionth customer!" This does not mean that there are 1 million people in the store, but that 1 million total people have been counted entering the store over all the years it has been open.
In other words, maybe it is possible that 100,000 accounts have been created in the history of *****. From the posts I have read here, it sounds like many, many people have signed up with them, only to cancel their account shortly after.

Jim Who's NOC is it??
Maybe it's theirs, and someone else used their pictures.
projo 09-13-2001, 10:06 PM ***** could not possibly have that many clients.
Do you have any idea how long it would take to ignor that many trouble tickets.
Do the math.

purplemokey 09-14-2001, 04:34 AM Is there any way of finding out the number of servers a webhost has?
joe52 09-14-2001, 05:45 PM Pair.com claims that they host about 111,000 sites. They keep a counter on their front page. Who knows how they count those sites? They do have their own datacenter, and they have some stats about their company available here:
http://www.pair.com/pair/about/statistics.html
I would think that a company like Verio would be bigger than any company mentioned in this thread so far.

sigma 09-15-2001, 10:00 AM We determine the number of sites using a script that identifies how many unique sites are hosted on all of our servers. It doesn't include cancelled or closed sites. It's updated every week or two; in fact, it's being updated right now.
Obviously, lots of hosts have their own methodology, and if you're playing a strict numbers game, there's no reason to do things like clean out cancelled sites.
Thanks,
Kevin
