been reading up this lovely forum and wow boy have i been out of circulation.

We anywasy here goes.. i am in need of a dedicated server to host a php3/ mysql intensive application. The server should be able to handle more than 2 mill hits a month (how much owuld that translate in terms of GB bandwdith? ). With good support ..since i stay abroad and well caling states is a very costly affair.

I am not intreted in web hosting as many other who buy space re. We are an ASP and require dedicated servers to give our clients access to the applciation (its web application). ALso as an ASP theri certian level of service required and guaranteed by us to our cleints.. and if the we cannot provide that leve then percentaage of money gets refunded. THe host should be able to gaurantee a level of performance.


So i looked and read this and other forums and came up with three names rackspace, Digital nation and DI

Rackspace

the linux servers seems to be bit pricy. Pluys the packge they were offering was 800 MZH 2 9.1 hard drives with their gold supprt and 10 GB for some hting liek 800$/mo. THe pricing is one sisue. but the supprt i have heardi s very good and i am lookign into that. Also i am looking into their Service Level agreement which semes to be very nice.

Pricing is okie slightly pricey..
THeir supprt seems to be off thecharts (the price that is).
Its verio company ..i havent heard too many good things abotu the VERIO company. Giving 50 gb.

Pricing of server fantastic almost 50% of rackspace.
But then they have heavy charges for help. ALso one cannot change the or add stuff to the system without suprt sayign we cannot help you you have changed the system.(thats whta i read in some post). Giving 65 gb.

I need ot decide which comapny should i goto.. i am favouring rackspace for their level of service and they seem very professional baout it..but dial tone intenet has pricing which i love..i am bit scred abiou their support. I need to find out more of their supprt. ALso on how they calculate bandwidth usgae. I saw very nasty post on DI calcualtion of bandwidth. Seems to be very very unfair.

Just need a few pros an cons on these two or thre companies..so that i can make up my mind..whhc i want to badly!!..


Another thing the question is RAQ3i , RAQ 4r or Linux.. what kidn of system should i go in for? how is the processing of php on RAQ 3i and raq 4r? I know raq2 had its share of problems..looking at min of 512 mb ram for both them. with RAQ RAID 1.

Any suggestion on the hosts i should go for( as in gimme the dirt so that i can make my mind up) and the system ( in terms of processing/performance of php and mysql.

I was looking at the same three, and found this nifty comparision page of DN, rackspace and Dialtone, against each other and Superb: http://services.superb.net/unix/ded-comp.shtml

It also has some interesting info on how Dialtone measures the traffic, which, by reading some older threads in this forum, does seem to be true.

For server type, get a real server and not a raq. They're overpriced and underpowered. I don't know about raq2s, but I know someone who had raq3s and had nothing but problems of crashes and hackins with those.

I heard of this new dedicated hosting company called skynetweb. I am looking at them and they do customized servers so you can get any kind of dedicated server you want.

I signed up with Rackspace.com a month ago, and have been very happy. Yes, the prices are slightly higher, but most support you would need is included. I installed all kinds of software and updates and screwed up Apache a bit, and their support guy spent an hour on the phone with me fixing it - no charge!

I chekced out CUSL2.com the other day. Still debating what motherboard to use for my Pentium 3 700 or Duron Combo. its gonna be an ABIT BX-133 Raid or the KT7 Raid.

dedicatedhosting.com has been excellent so far

they have nice hardware and lots of bandwidth

they actually rated higher than the three companies you mentioned to me (and I did a lot of research). Plus they are big and have been around for a while. Also the specialize in dedicated servers ;)

also their prices are negotiable ... which is always cool

(also heard good things about catalog.com, but no personal experience)

Rackspace's support is simply superb, no doubt about it. More amazingly, like you said, it's free, which is a rarity in today's dedicated host market.

Many dedicated server companies offer some support for free and/or for a limited time and charge for other things.

Most of Rackspace's support is included in the cost of their managed servers, not all of it. Rackspace charges $62.50 per half hour ($125 hourly) for other things.


Years ago, Robert Heinlein coined the phrase TANSTAAFL (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch). You pay for support anywhere you go. It can be as you need it or built into higher prices, but don't kid yourself that you're not paying for it in some manner.

TANSTAAFL. Poor grammar, good sense.

For IDE based servers the CUSL2 is the best board out on the market it was rated #1 in speed and reliablity. We use it on alot of our IDE systems now unless someone requests a different board.

I have heard many good things about Dialtone Internet.

As you probably know, they don't provide free tech support after the first 30 days. This usually scares most people away.

However, you should realize that they will not charge you if the problem was not YOUR fault. So basically... don't mess with things that you don't know about, and you will be fine. :D

in the past 4 months I have only needed to "authorize charges" once. It ended up being a hardware problem which they fixed in 30 minutes, and I was not charged a penny.

I haven't needed them for anything else that I couldn't find in their FAQ, from a book, or from online resources. The extra couple hundred dollars per month I would of paid with Rackspace is better spent in other areas of my business.

No free support? You mean those techs actually get paid? LOL

Obviously, that paycheck has to come from somewhere. In one form or another it comes from the customers! :)
