View Full Version : I need a home for my simplenet pages
Michael T 09-22-2000, 07:07 AM I have a personal site with Simplenet ( thunder.simplenet.com ). Yahoo has taken them over and if I do not move to one of their plans my site will be cancelled.
Being an aussie who earns Pacific Pesos ( AKA Australia Dollar ) I simply cannot afford anything too expensive. One aussi dollar is worth about 54c US.
Fortunately my needs are not great. My site caters for my weather and wildflower hobbies. The site is currently 35mb and growing, I average 3500 page hits a day, and downloads of generally under 30mb per day. Weather is my hobby, not playing with web pages, so I do not need anything too fancy, FTP did me fine, but I will take what I can get as far as new services go.
So my needs are generous space, but probably not too big a bandwith ( see above ). I will probably not need tech support either, never did with Simplenet.
I have read the posts here and Below$10 Gold plan is the best I have seen.
A friend has his lightning pics on Feature Price, their plans are also in my price range. Has anybody had any experience with them ?
Any other recommendations.
Thanks.
DynastyHost 09-22-2000, 07:42 AM Below10host is pretty good. If you're looking for least expensive plan, below10host is the right place for you.
Their support is good too. Hope that helps :)
btw.. what do you guys think of my reseller plans?

What was the need of this in the post?
DynastyHost 09-22-2000, 11:17 AM I'm trying to get feedback, opinions.
kunal 09-22-2000, 11:21 AM Seemed more like you were telling him to go check your "hosting" plans out! :)
How come I dun see a post on the Reseller board where the lines regarding your re-seller plans should actually be?
[Edited by kunal on 09-22-2000 at 11:24 AM]
DynastyHost 09-22-2000, 11:25 AM Look buddy.. have you checked it out yet? If you have..you will noticed that there is no way of odering my plans.. because I DON"T have it yet.. I"m still gathering feedback.
Just disregard my post asking to give opinions.. sorry for asking.
you dont' have to make a big deal of out everything..
MilkMan 09-22-2000, 04:02 PM Hmm, I was in the same department as I had 3 domains aliased together at simplenet at the $20 a month unlimited plan. Had them there for 3 years until yahoo bought them out and started changing things.
Since they were trying to wean out the old contracts I decided to leave and moved to another host. Rather not say who since I'm pissed at my decision to do so.
Not really the new hosts fault but rather the recent downtime of the Alabanza network. Yahoo may have had it's problems but atleast their servers were up.
To dynasty, I may join your reseller thing as it looks pretty good. Say...you're not Alabanza are you? :)
DynastyHost 09-22-2000, 04:35 PM Yes.. I"m with alabanza and I can say it proudly :)
The recent down times that they had were due to some hardware problems.. I has already been fixed.
If I were to think that the connection at Alabanza is bad, I would pack my stuff a long time ago.
Every NOC have thier own problems.. :) some are easier to deal with..
I hope that will help you deciding where to go.. If you decided not to go with my reseller plans, I Recomend you get a dedicated server from Alabanza.
Good luck
Dynasty,
I believe where the confusion comes in is the fact that you asked for opinions on the reseller plans, which Kunal perceived to be way off-topic. I think it'd be far easier if you just started a new topic asking for opinions ;)
Michael,
Welcome to WHL from a fellow Aussie! (and two/three others ;)) I hosted with Below $10 Host up to early last month and was very, very satisfied with not only their service, but their reliability and speed. You should have no problems with them.
akashik 09-23-2000, 07:11 AM Michael,
Same here - welcome :) I didn't respond earlier as I haven't dealt with below10 but BC seems to know what he's on about occasionally *chuckle*. I agree with you on the dollar part though - what seems like a great deal to these americans and english is still close to twice the price for us these days! Looks like floating the dollar wasn't such a hot idea after all huh? :)
Took a look at your site and was amazed! In over 4 years online I've never seem such a comprehensive site devoted to the weather. (especially Australian weather). Of course for me weather is something if I stick my head out the door and it gets wet, I stay inside - and that's about it *grin*

Michael T 09-23-2000, 07:46 AM Thanks for all the replies. It seems Below10 is a favourite and it was my favourite too until I logged into their site tonight and their Gold and Basic plans have just gone up $1.00. What timing ! arrgghh. That's about $2 Australian. Oh well they may just have priced themselves into competion now.
Any other suggestions around the $4-$7 mark.
Anybody heard of FeaturePrice ??
I have spent alot of time talking to Dynasty Hosting on and off this board I can assure you that he was not up to the same sneaky tricks some hosts will do...hes a very nice man.
I think some of you need to back off, chill out or what ever youd like to call it and not see "sneaky" every where..it was an honest mistake..you know there is a nice way to deal with people that promotes a nice relationship then there is a nasty way that promotes hard feelings.

I'd imagine you'll find quite a few Alabanza-based raising by a buck. That won't put their plans out of reach for most people, but if you're looking for way low end, or at currency conversion, it might. :)
Unfortunately, I don't know of any host that offers a low-low end plan that I would recommend, based on reviews and chatter around the forums. Sorry.
akashik 09-23-2000, 11:20 AM I decided to check out something local for you as our exchange rate is pretty nasty. I went to a client's host as they are pretty reliable and have good uptime. Was pretty horrified when I got to the pricing, so this post is for the rest of you here as an example of what Australians get to deal with. Even if you go and almost halve the prices to get current US pricing I think you'll still be pretty amazed.

See why we all flock to US servers? *lol*

I too spoke to him off the board, and concluded the same thing.. which is why I did not respond to his last post he made! :)
eclipse 09-23-2000, 12:25 PM Hi,
You may want to take a look at http://www.hostrocket.com or http://www.westhost.com. I've heard some good things about them on a couple other message boards but I haven't had any real experience with their customer service so maybe someone here could throw their two cents in whether they have heard anything about them, good or bad. Both of them have plans starting under $10USD.
Good Luck!
Learner 09-24-2000, 07:55 AM Yeah... I hear you on the ratio US $1 : AUS $2 ...
Out here where I live it is US $1 : IN Rs46 ...
Now you guys know why I always am so price conscious :bawling:
Learner
kunal 09-24-2000, 08:05 AM your not the only one Learner :bawling: I am with you! :bawling:
TheWingThing 09-24-2000, 03:16 PM Hey Learner and Kunal,
Me too in India and let's all join the sob club.
Right now, US$ 1 = INR (Indian Rs.) 46.05.
An average Indian graduate makes around INR 6,000 mo = US $ 130.
Now, :smash:
TheWingThing.
Not to really take the topic off tangent, but have any of you from India experienced those terrible floods in West Bengal? It's like the 4th time in 4-5 years or so from what I can recall!
kunal 09-25-2000, 01:20 AM Nopes, me is in Bombay, other end of India :)
