View Full Version : [URGENT]An Expiring Domain Name!!
qm8309 11-19-2003, 12:12 AM i have been watching this domain name (a very good one) for months and its scheduled expiration date is tomorrow. i thought the owner would renew it for sure - but 2 my surprise he didnt, yet.
so i want to know if i go ahead and "backorder" it from a registrar now, wuts my chance of success? in other words, wut exactly happens from the moment a domain name's expiration date arrives? will it expire instantly? or is there any sort of grace period? and if this is a good name, is there any chance it is being monitored by some sort of automatic systems or even the registrar itself so it would b taken immediately rite after it expires so i dont even stand a chance?
the current registrar of the domain name is network solutions.
ur advice is appreciated.
CS-Stacie 11-19-2003, 12:16 AM Depends on the registrar,
Normal operation for registrars is as follows
REGISTRAR-HOLD > 30 days
REDEMPTION PERIOD > 10-30 days
PENDING DELETE > 10-30 days
Although registrars are required to follow a standard drop cycle, many do not.
blue27 11-19-2003, 12:18 AM There is also a good chance that if the domain is as good as you say, you will be on a waiting list for the back order.
kkimmel 11-19-2003, 12:18 AM It might help if you told us who the domain was registered through... I snipe domains as a main line of work like this, so I know how various processors behave.... and if it is through Network Soultions you are gonna be waiting...
Its important to note that this whole "Backorder" thing is a fraud. The domain is either avaliable for registration or it is not. There is no inbetween on this. Backordering it is basically you giving your money to them now and IF it becomes open, you'll get it and if it dosent they still have your dough.
qm8309 11-19-2003, 12:21 AM so thats another 90 days from the time the domain name expires till its actually dropped? any1 knows the specific policy of network solutions?
hmm looks like i dont have a chance at all. :crap:
kkimmel 11-19-2003, 12:21 AM heh, Network Soultions.
They are supposed to delete them. But they can and often do hold onto them much longer than they are supposed to.
qm8309 11-19-2003, 12:23 AM .
You may check whether someone has backordered the name in http://snapnames.com
Hostopedia 11-19-2003, 01:05 AM Hello Mike,

Not to dishearten but just in case you didn't realise, that person can renew the domain even after it expires until it is actually dropped by the registrar which is usually 90 days..
so i want to know if i go ahead and "backorder" it from a registrar now, wuts my chance of success?
The chances of you snapping it through back-ordering are very slim. However, the chances of you losin your hard-earned money are a lot. However, if you really intend to back-order, go with a reliable and successful back-ordering company. But again, note that no matter which company you go with, they can be only successful if an only if the domain actually gets dropped from the registry.
in other words, wut exactly happens from the moment a domain name's expiration date arrives? will it expire instantly? or is there any sort of grace period?
After expiry, the domain is placed -
(i) in a grace period - 45 days
(ii) redemption period - 30 days
(iii) pending delete - 5/15 days
(iv) made available to the public
and if this is a good name, is there any chance it is being monitored by some sort of automatic systems or even the registrar itself so it would b taken immediately rite after it expires so i dont even stand a chance?
Yes, very much possible...
G'luck in u r domain pursuit:agree:

Arsenik101 11-19-2003, 02:50 AM From my personal experience a domain that i wanted expired on day 1 and over 60 days later i was able to grab it using expirefish.com services. It grabbed the domain the second it became available and was put into my registerfly.com account with a year of registration included. (19$ for the service)
Heres a nice domain status legend... http://www.whois.sc/domain-help/status-codes.html
Good luck.
fattee77 11-19-2003, 04:51 AM Expirefish won't catch a cold, unless the domain means nothing to other people. A domain at Netsol goes into Registrar-Hold for 30 days, Then into Redemption-Period for 30 days, Then into Pending Delete for 5-6 days, before it gets released.Btw if the domain is really good like you say, it's probably backordered at snapnames months before it expires. You could try Pool.com or Namewinner.com, but if other users are interested they auction it and it ends up being very expensive. Besides I don't agree backordering is a fraud, because you don't have a chance registering the domain manually and they have chances all the way with all their registry connections. Btw Pool.com and Namewinner.com only require to be paid if the domain is caught by them, so no money upfront.

nameslave 11-19-2003, 10:47 AM Wow! I almost can't believe my eyes! There are so much ill-informed and totally outdated "information" rendered in this thread (along with some very useful and helpful of course) that it's really a pain in the hmmm to sort them through. Allow me to copy and past another post of mine here for your reference:
To answer your question: Yes, there IS some sort of grace period; 2 actually. First, there's the registrar-level grace period which is optional but endorsed by nearly all major registrars and usually last around 30 days or so. Then there's the compulsory registry-level Redemption Grace Period (RGP) which is EXACTLY 30 days in length. During these 2 periods, existing registrant (i.e. owner) will be able to renew or restore registration (though not without extra costs). If no action is being taken, the said domain will go into the actual pending delete queue (that's another 5 days).
I would recommend checking your domain's status at reasonable intervals (like every few days or so) to see if it has entered the Redemption Period. Once it's there, mark your calendar and check back again in 30 days. If everything's fine, you'll be able to register it in less than a week.
Having said that, ANY previously active website is useful for at least its residual traffic; so to play it safe, you may consider some backordering (snapping) services. Hope this helps.

Simply a quick note that i had tried to back order the domain using NetSol and i wasnt able because someone had already done it already. Then decided to give expirefish a try and get the domain in question and it worked. It was my first time trying to grab a domain and was a positive experience.
Don't know if this helps but if a domain I want isn't available I try to think of a different one, or make slight variations to the name. You can sometimes think of a better one than the origional!
NeonHQ 11-20-2003, 12:48 AM expirefish let you backorder, but i dont think expirefish will successfully get it. Look around, there are bad comments on expirefish.
