View Full Version : Bandwith why limited!!!??
cariani 09-10-2001, 10:59 PM Hello all,
my question:
-how high have to be the bandwith for a site who gets 10. 000 visits a day?
My problem: I can not finde a host who offers eough bandwith and space.
There are some host offering unlimited bandwith, but only 50 mb webspace; or unlimited webpsace and only 200 mb datatransfer
Not getting enough bandwith is like going to bed at midnight and after two hours comes someone wakes you up saying: "hey, wake up, your "bandwith" is over :)
Some guys here are saying unlimited bandwith does not exist!! Does Yahoo.com have also limited bandwith ... i dont think so!
Thankyou for helping
Jimmy
sqposter 09-10-2001, 11:16 PM take your web sites average page size and work out the numbers. I believe that there was a thread on this about 4 weeks ago.
If your site gets about 10K page load perday and the traffic is USA based. You should be able to get a decent ad rate of .14 - .34 per cpm without a problem. Therefor justifying your cost to have a better server and go with a decent plan.

Yes, they are limited to the amount of bandwidth they can afford. Do you honestly think Yahoo.com has found some $50 a month/unlimited bandwidth hosting company to host their site???

freeva 09-10-2001, 11:32 PM All depending on what I kind of site you have. I have a client with pic galary. he is sucking in 20-30 GB a day.
RunOfTheMill 09-11-2001, 12:59 AM no you wont get a banner deal unless your impressions are in the million range.
Nobody caters to such small sites, whats the point.
Plus goodluck finder an agency to advertise on yoru site, most of them are going bankrupt, Engage, 24-7
ETC.
Welcome to the new Internet.
seattlite 09-11-2001, 01:00 AM unlimited = myth
As far as calculating data transfer, doing the math is the best thing to do. Say avg page has 10 K, and 20K worth of images. Thats about 30 K per page, so just multiply that by the amount of impressions you get.
That number will be a favorable estimate, since caching will make the actual amount of data transfer less. Of course, you always want more...

Please take a look at content zone. they pay out at a Banner rate of .14 cpm on small site that serve less than 20,000 pages per day. other rates are avalible.
I have placed about 4 million page loads (monthly) with them over many different account that I handle at a rate from .17 to .46 per cpm. I could broker 10000 page load per day at .17 easy if it's the "right type of site".
can you make big money at .14 no, but can you pay your web sites monthly fixed cost. yes.

RunOfTheMill 09-11-2001, 01:36 AM edit my last post to read
a banner deal that is worth something.
The days of rates in the 5$ are gone.
the only stable online ad agency is doubleclick
and unless you have about 5million a month, you wont get service.
:D

What you've left out of the statement above is the price, not to mention your needs (how much space). Surely there are hosts that offer the combination of what you need, but the price might not work for you (and I think that's the issue here).
It comes down to costs. Bandwidth costs money, it isn't free for the host, so it ain't gonna be free for you. This is a given. What you have to consider is, how much of that pipe is that host going to give you for $10/mo. or less? Not all that much when it is costing them a great deal per month.
Yahoo pays for the amount of bandwidth they require. If you were willing to do this as well, you'd have no problem finding a host that meets your needs. If you are hoping for some unrealistic plan where you get 500 times what you are paying for, well simply, you aren't going to find that magic charity host.
cariani 09-11-2001, 11:21 PM Thank you Chicken :)
Thank you all :)

Mac Write 09-12-2001, 02:11 AM Tera Byte (http://www.tera-byte.com) is a very reliable host and has a very good space/bandwidith/price.
You get 200MB space, 20GB bandwidith for $9.25/month. on 300,000 page-views a month, you should only be using 10-12GB depending on your page size.
