View Full Version : Newbie Question re: hosting multiple domains

I'm new to this whole thing and working on a website right now. When you look at the typical plans, can you only host 1 domain under each plan? It seems like and awful lot of diskspace that some places offer for only 1 site.

Are there hosts which allow you to host different sites under one plan or is that kinda the catch in a sense (very few users consume their alloted resources because they're only building 1 site)?

I'm trying to plan ahead and may be creating a few sites over the next year and don't want a plan with too much resources if it will go wasted...

thanks,
Mike

Some hosters allow this, but you usually have to ask and there may be a few small charges.

Many allow it, but do charge a little extra for it. It is not that it is "the catch", but more domain names means more DNS hits, more CPU usage, more mail etc. Generally more domains drain more resources.

Many customers surprisingly do use all their space and with plans out there that are so inexpensive now it really is sort of a non-issue.

But, then I remember when disk space was expensive! :)

So is there something in the hosts feature list that will alert me to whether or not they allow it or do I have to ask them all specifically? Just wondering if it's staring me in teh face and I don't know what to look for.

thanks for the help,
Mike

You could just ask them. But if you are looking at a host that has hosting for just a few dollars a month, you are not really going to save anything and they will probably just tell you to get a separate site.

Remember, hosts, like programmers, tend to do the same thing the same way each time. I would not try to change the system just to save just a dollar or two. You will end up having to explain your set every time you need support, because your sites are set up different than everybody elses.

It also depends on the features you want associated with the second site. If you don't need features like separate mail and cgi, you could just redirect to a internal directory.
