View Full Version : Tera-Byte - need best option assistance
Flippster 09-10-2001, 12:06 AM I am looking for a new host for my 5 domains. 4 of which are down right now and this is why I need to move on. AFHosting has me up against a wall and is not doing a thing as far as contacting me and answering my emails for the last 3 days.
Tera Byte was one host I was referred to in this forum. I searched some threads on Tera-Byte and was mostly pleased with what I read. What convinced me was their recent upgrade and ticket support went from 24 hours to 8.
Their plan of 9.25 a month with 200MB and 20 Gigs looks great to me- or 100 a year for that. Multiplying that by my 5 domains would cost me 500 a year.
Then I saw their virtual server plan. Not sure what the difference is except I think it is kinda like your own server , but isn't your own server ... I am confused by that still.
Anyway I think with the virtual thing I can put all 5 domains into it? If that is correct can I add more into it? How many can I go to with a virtual server?
This plan is 50 a month or 600 a year. So for me - would the extra 100 be worth it to go this route considering I may be adding more domains as I get more client to build websites for?
freeva 09-10-2001, 12:56 AM If all your domains require more than 10GB of bandwidth each, then you will be better off with $10/plan. Otherwise go for the $50/month virtual plan.
yes - that virtual server is confusing ? is not all shared hosting done on a virtual server ? does it mean that no of accounts are less on the so called virtual server than the regular shared plan ?
I hope someoone can make it clear.
Another query is that have they stopped cobalt raq s?
In my opinion best bet will be to go for $9 - 20 gigs plan,.
other hostings worth taking a look are
aletiahosting
valuablehost
wzpro
( as I say) not in any specific order

The virtual server thing is new to me as well. Maybe it is an implementation of this http://www.ensim.com/solutions/ps.shtml
hi Mike,
that was a good lot of info - so is tera using that ?
Mike can u please tell two more things :
have tera stopped cobalt ?
where can I find a list of their clients ( like testimonils/satsf cl etc)
- they have got a page but which is non-hyperlinked names basically conveying nothing -
a list can help to test the speed etc
Flippster 09-10-2001, 08:40 AM Well what I was hoping for was that someone from tera byte or even better someone using tera byte and specifically the virtual hosting plan would comment and fill me / us in.
Lets keep watching the thread.
I did a search at the top of the screen for Tera-Byte and found that they were upgrading all of the Racs to something else. 833MHZ something or another.
They found the Racs not able to handle their virtual hosting needs I guess.
Not too sure, but was interested in more info from users.
Chicken 09-10-2001, 09:48 AM Steve posted a bit of an announcement in the Advertising Forum (main Web Hosting Offers one). This offer and change is new, so it might be hard to find people using this just yet.
roh2106 09-11-2001, 05:56 AM I'm pretty curious about the virtual server plan myself. I've got a RAQ3 with 4webspace rightnow, and am considering moving to the virtual server plan.
I asked Steve about the config of the virtual server machines and whether other users of the same machine will be able to affect me in any way...... his answer
"no user has access to the physical hardware they can only overtax/crash their own virtual serve rthey have no effect on any other virtual server on the system or the physical hardware
servers are p-3 933's with 768 megs of ram"
So they're probably installing seperate web server software for different users, and givign each user access to their own root...?
Anyways, I'm quite sure I'll be switching to the virtual server option from my RAQ3 after this month. Saves $50/month! :D
Mike the newbie 09-11-2001, 07:01 AM The virtual server concept is nothng new. IBM has had virtual machines on their mainframes for decades (literally).
Depending upon the robustness of Ensim's implementation, each server is allocated a share of the CPU and other resources, and each server is unaffected by what happens in the other virtual servers.
Maybe there is a directory structure similar to;
/
/vserver
/vserver/server1/bin
/vserver/server1home
/vserver/server1/usr
/vserver/server1/etc
/vserver/server1/and_so_forth
/vserver/server2/bin
/vserver/server2home
/vserver/server2/usr
/vserver/server2/etc
/vserver/server2/and_so_forth
The root directory of each virtual server is "anchored" at the /virtual/servern level. So it appears that the "owner" of each virtual server has a normal directory tree at his/her disposal.
(just speculation on my part...)
roh2106 09-11-2001, 09:41 AM Hmm, so its quite possible that all the server software and stuff will be counted in that 2 GB? Thats a lot of space "wasted"! ;)

I am doing nothing but speculating here. The best thing to do is to ask Tera-Byte. I am sure they can give you the info you need.
Beagle 09-15-2001, 02:26 PM A week ago the VDS at Tera-byte was saying 50$ / month now it's 69$. Still says coming soon though. I guess they are just working out the final deatails still...
I wrote them last week and they replied saying they were using Ensim's product for the virtual servers.
roh2106 09-15-2001, 02:45 PM Yeah, when I saw $69 as the price, I thought I must have read it wrong earlier as $50. Hmm .... I may still go for it, I'm not really using my dedicated server much, and if I'm able to save $30 on it, I guess its worth it.
Flippster 09-15-2001, 06:06 PM The price was 50 on that virtual server, but no sooner than after I posted this, it went up to 69.
I did go with tera-byte for 1 of my domains at their 9.25 a month rate. All is good so far and they even responded to a DNS update request by me through everyone.net in less than 2 hours my MX was updated. Support is A#1 so far. That is why I needed to move to another host and so far glad I have switched. I just wish I would have switched before my 4 sites went down. Which by the way , AFhosting has still not replied to me nor gotten them back up and running. It is going on 3 weeks. I wonder how trying to get a refund from AF hosting will be .....
I will soon be moving more domains over to tera-byte.com as soon as I finish testing the one I am moving now.
