Has anyone else installed the Ximian Desktop?

I installed it and for some reason certain processes seem to have slowed down to a crawl.. Returning from a screen saver mode to and active desktop takes forever now.. Red Hat Network's up2date no longer works properly due to dependancy conflicts, installing RPM's now seems to take forever and other weird stuff..

I don't even use it.. I tried it and decided I like KDE allot beter.

Is it just me or is anyone else having problems? My machine seemed to be a hell of alot faster in general before.

I'd like to dump it but can't figure how to uninstall it without starting over from scratch with a fresh install.. I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

Yep I installed it, and promptly reformatted to get rid of it and reinstalled RH 9.0

OMG..
Thanks Gary,

That's what I was hoping to avoid.. :( But I guess a re-install is eminent..

Well I'm sure you could get rid of it without such drastic measures, but I wasn't in the mood to try, I just blew it off and reinstalled fresh and ran with it, I wanted to try Mandrake 9.2 anyway (didn't like it).

My drive is dying on this computer so I have a new 120G sitting here, bought a copy of Suse 9.0 gonna reformat and see how I like Suse. As soon as I can figure out how to move XP from the 60 it's on now to this new 120, 120G in my "work" computer is just overkill, heck the 40 in here now that's dying is overkill.

Let me know if SuSE is any good, I am interested in that product. :D

Thanks, I'll just do the same.. Blow out the drive and re-install.. I tried Mandrake 9.1 once. I liked it in some fasion it felt smoother than RH but for some really odd reason it did not work with my 3Com Nic. and a few other problems. (Very Odd) RH9 installed, a few minor configs and there it is..

I have not tried SuSe either.. Keep us posted how that works.. I've seen the Distros in comp. stores and it looks interesting, they seem to offer a bit more than RH but I'm stuborn and stuck with the tried and true..

OK.. All squeeky clean.. Fresh install of RH9 I'm back to turbo speed now.. It was kinda strange.. This Duron 750 w/256mb is back to it's old self and as fast as my winbox with an 1800xp and 512mb.. Go figure.. lol

Keep the Monkey off your back! Say no to Ximian! lol

Well got Suse 9.0 installed and so far I'm gonna say I think I like it better than Redhat for desktop.

Highlights:

kopete - all in one irc/icq/msn/yahoo/aim/jabber client, and it's pretty usable too, got rid of xchat, licq, and psi (jabber client) and just use this now.

susewatcher - like RHN without the $60 per year entitlement

Overall the default settings and fonts are crystal clear, on my 19" LCD I've had problems in the past with fonts under XP and Redhat looking bad, so far everything is crisp and clear with Suse's default KDE/font setup.

Some things that annoy me a bit:

The default list of installed apps is kinda weak, Mozilla, Evolution are not installed by default, the list of games installed by default is kinda short too.

Ok I said things but that's really all that's annoyed me enough yet to actually make note of it.

Only been using it most of the day so it'll still be a while before I can honestly say it's better (for me) than Redhat, but I knew within 30 minutes Mandrake wasn't gonna cut it (I'm good at snap decisions).

I tried kopete and could not get it to compile properly. It say's it configured fine but when I run make it pops up with a slew of errors.. I also tried the RPM's and that did'nt work. Somethings odd going on there so I use Gaim instead. It's not as pretty as kopete but it works. The only protocol I really use is AIM I seldom use MSN or Yahoo. And I still use xchat for IRC. I don't use evolution either.. I use Mozillas Mail. I like the junk filtering capabilities.

I'll have to give Suse a try.. I discovered something on my RH install disks yesterday that I was not too happy about.. During install when it came time to insert disk 2 it would not mount the CDROM. Then it would lockup.. After wasting 4 attepmts I had to resort back to my downloaded disks instead. That installed just fine. Not sure what is going on there. I read the CDROM once Linux was installed and it reads the disk fine but wont install from it. I'm puzzled.. None the less at least I'm up and running with the downloaded distros.

Mandrake for me was out from the get go.. I had problems as soon as I installed it.. It would not work with my 3-Com nic. It found the NIC ok it even knew the model.. But for some reason it wouldnt connect. I tired 10 ways to sunday to get it wo work and no luck. RH found the nic and had me online without really having to touch anything.

The problem most likely isn't Ximian but the applications you've got installed.
I've been using Ximian for a good 2,3 years and never once have I seen a problem with it.

There are numerous problems with later versions of redhat and X simply because of the "bluecurve" manager that they throw in there. Unfortunately, with this installed, you're pretty much limited to the manager THEY want you to use, not KDE, not Ximian, NOT Gnome, but redhat's manager (which is a deriv of Gnome).
