View Full Version : 5 Star Communications Sucks!!!!
PaulRoberts 09-09-2001, 03:39 PM I'm sorry about such a negative subject but I have never received such sh*tty service in my life. Once again my website is down for unknown reasons. They have not contacted me and their phone number has no one answering...great freaking tech support.
If anyone has had similar experiences with them lately post them here. I have already contacted the better business bureau about them so hopefully they will investigate their shotty business practices.
In the mean time, I live in Northern VA and I am looking to move my server out of there ASAP. I need to find someone that resells server space in a NOC here locally. All I need is 2U of space and some bandwidth. Please help me get out of this situation.
Regards,
Paul Roberts

you should not pass such comments without stating why they suck, what they did etc.
you said your web site was down. from / for how much time ?. what was the reason.
You said you contacted them through phone. have you contacted them through email ?. what was the reponse. ?. there phones may be down because of weekend. etc.
You should not post comments like this on any company without providing full evidence etc.
sorry but your post irritated me so much.
PaulRoberts 09-09-2001, 05:10 PM I used to host with Version12/UUNET and they were fantastic. My server does not crash, is a VA Linux box with 1G of ram and 2 PIII 850s - the load average is at most .5. They do not have onsite technical support 24/7. I have sent them multiple emails explaining that my site has been down AT LEAST all day.
They do not monitor the servers because they didn't even know it was down, they didn't even know if it was a colo or dedicated server after I had given them my name (they should know this).
I am just very displeased with the service, all I ask for is to have 24/7 access to bandwidth and so far they are unable to provide this to me.

Chicken 09-09-2001, 07:18 PM Although this is a new thread, I remember Paul having problems with 5star once they switched from v12. Quickly checking back through your posts Paul, I'd say the problems aren't going to go away and the sooner you find something more to your liking, the better.
Jimbo 09-10-2001, 02:05 PM On Friday night, Alan @ 5sc called me, saying that ALL the dedicated boxes at MAE Dulles had to be backed up, because while they were originally going to physically move the dedicated machines from there to Atlanta, the fine folks over at MAE Dulles were not going to give them access to take the machines (some dispute over who owned them, or something?), so to anticipate having my machine shut down by them, on Monday.. which it has.
My weekend was ruined. Since it is fully managed, wouldnt THEY be responsible for this??
They set us up with a replacement machine to back all our data onto, although it had half the haddrive space that the original machine had.. great. I spent all weekend trying to transfer GIGS worth of data and clients to the new box, which didnt have enough space to hold it all. Oh, did I mention I am a newbie sys admin, at best :) Needless to say, I somehow got everything over, finally, last night, and have been setting up the damn machine for hours already. Finally seems to be up, but still no DNS/MX change on their end.
I have no f'ing clue what's going on now, since I left 3 voice messages and sent 4 emails in the past few hours.
Anyone else going through this? As you can tell, I do have a decent amount of patience, but it is wearing thin...
Did I mention that I miss Alan and Roseanne :)

Inspa.net 09-12-2001, 12:35 PM When we first moved over from Version12 to 5 Star, my initial thoughts were they were absolutely appalling. We've had no end of problems from the day we switched over. But I must point out that the majority of them were network downtime - which was down to MAE Dullies, not 5 Star directly.
Our server died on us unexpectedly around a month ago. Which is a disaster in itself - we then found out that 5sc had changed the settings for the backup server, which we FTP'd our backups over to daily. I wasn't aware of this, and the best backup we had stored was over a week old - not much cop, considering we paid extra for it.
They shipped the server over from Virginia to Atlanta, and managed to restore all of the data. In the meantime, they set us up with new IP addresses, a new server with slightly higher specifications, and were very helpful with the whole process. I was in constant discussion with one of their technical support guys(Ankur - he's a pretty good guy :)). Since the move, we've had no noticeable network downtime(we've been up around a month) and have worked with 5 Star to resolve some connectivity problems(we couldn't burst terribly quickly). All in all I'd say we've had some major issues, but so long as things stay the way they are I'm more than happy to stay with them for the future.
My best advice to you is shoot an email to Charles Smith(cts@5sc.net) and try to resolve the matter with him. I think he's the top guy there and we've managed to resolve all our problems after discussion with him. Tell him you're not happy with the situation, tell him you are looking to leave if it is not resolved to your satisfaction within a certain timeframe(be reasonable with it - don't tell them you want the server moved, IP'd and running in 30 minutes).
My bet is if you stick it out with them and get moved over to Atlanta, you'll come out of it all okay.
Support is not and probably will never be the main factor in choosing 5 Star for a host - but if you can run the server without much assistance then you'll be alright so long as the network stays up.
If you need any help with your server, either configuring or backing up your data, feel free to shoot me an email at rich@inspa.net - I read above that your server was managed, and you might get the whole process speeded up if you start to tackle it a bit yourself.
I sincerely hope you get the whole situation resolved to your satisfaction - I was most unhappy with them for a couple of months, but a month later my opinion of them has changed quite dramatically. So long as they keep it up :).
Please let us all know how things pan out!
Rich
