View Full Version : Misleading at best, ripoff at worst
CactusCounty 11-13-2003, 02:58 AM Here is yet another eBay listing to check out, this one for a webhosting domain name. Nothing too much wrong with the listing until you read the "fine print".
Description says, "Buyer pays transfer fees." Okay, no big deal, that's normal. None listed in the description, figure they probably want fifteen bucks or so. Check shipping and handling since a lot of people stick it there. Nope. Nothing really there either....
Now take a look at the bottom of the shipping and payment details area, under Seller's payment instructions....
'Oly chit! This guy is counting on some sucker not reading the entire listing.

That's why the bid starts at $1.99 :)
Charter 11-13-2003, 03:05 AM Seller's payment instructions:
buyer pays transfer fees of $154.50.
Transfer fees?
He can charge anything he wants, no one has to bid on it.
But one person did, and they both got negitive feedback for it :(

True, at least this time he was "generous" enough to put the transfer fee into the listing. The first time he has "shipping" listed at $3, which the poor bidder probably mistook to be the transfer fee.
Gotta watch some of these guys....
Seller's payment instructions:
buyer pays transfer fees of $154.50.
what the..?
Kimmikat 11-13-2003, 03:40 AM That's a bad eBayer!

TheDoctor 11-13-2003, 06:20 AM I don't know much about ebay, but I am sitting here wondering why you would have "shipping costs" for a domain .. I mean its not like you have to pack it up and frieght it across the country.
CactusCounty 11-13-2003, 06:24 AM A lot of sellers will include the transfer fees as shipping and handling, presumably "handling" rather than "shipping".
At least, one would hope.
eBay doesn't add any fields for things like "Transfer Fees" so you have to make do with what they give you. A better place would be, if not in the description itself, then under "Seller's payment instructions" like this guy did.
except he thought he could get a huge fee... :rollees:
kkimmel 11-13-2003, 08:43 AM How can you blame the seller for your inability and/or failure to read the entire listing? Thats not misleading and its not a ripoff. Its your problem if you can't read or failure to read the entire listing.
A fool and his money soon part.
NE-Andy 11-13-2003, 09:20 AM well, that's the first time I see transfer fee above three digits... and may it be the last...
Tropical Tundra 11-13-2003, 10:12 AM Very shoddy but he does have the transfer fee (as ridiculously high as it is) in the auction. It's the bidders responsibility to read the entire thing and then ask the seller questions if in doubt. He is getting negative feedback and is only at 75% so his little trick is catching up to him but I do agree that the bidder is at fault for falling for this why would anyone bid without reading the entire auction info!
Complaint : He wanted a $154.50 transfer fee. LOL! Beware this guy. He will try to rip u off
Response by mineralman987 - buyer didn't read --everyone else did plain and simple ...ABC....hmm

well, that's the first time I see transfer fee above three digits... and may it be the last... I agree he'll learn quick that is not a good way to do business. I just sold a pack of four domains on ebay and I charged a transfer fee of $10 for all four. I make it clear that it's my own fee since registrars don't charge transfer fees at least the ones I used. You try to screw people like that on ebay and you won't get far. EBay sucks for selling domains anyway I just use it to dump domains that are expiring within 2-3 months and I don't want to renew.

Response by mineralman987 - buyer didn't read --everyone else did plain and simple ...ABC....hmm In the listing that he got the negative feedback for the $154.50 was not listed. It had $3.00 in the shipping and handling area, nothing anywhere else other than 'buyer pays transfer fees."
I would have emailed to be sure, but I would never have thought I would get a response of $154.50.

I do read the entire listing when I'm looking at eBay, but many people won't even read through the entire discription. That's their problem....But if this guy had a bit more integrity he would post such an exhorbitant fee in plain site rather than a.) Not at all as in the first listing, or b.) buried in the small print at the bottom as in the current one.
Just my $0.02.

Wow, I just took a look at the old auction and I see what you mean now! You're absolutely right that is an all out scam to list a domain for $1.99 and not mention anywhere about a $154 transfer fee! It's a classic bait and switch scam move. Now that he has his ridiculous high transfer fee listed there won't get any bids.
Amish_Geek 11-13-2003, 04:26 PM That auction violates ebay's selling policies.
Taken off the Prohibited and Restricted Items page: "eBay prohibits the listing of items or products to be delivered electronically through the Internet."
Hmm...
Tropical Tundra 11-13-2003, 04:27 PM Now he gave the winning bidder a negative feedback, what a scumbag this guy!
Complaint : bidder didn't pay or read TOS under auction-- Sellers beware!
Response by e1internet - BS Retaliatory Feedback. He wanted a $154.50 EXTRA transfer fee which I w/n pay
