sbrad 09-08-2001, 03:39 AM Does anyone know how to track down and fix a "such-n-such.exe has caused an error and will be closed" error in Win2k? I installed Opera today and I can't even get it to come up. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, downloaded a fresh copy.
I hate this.
Fiber 09-08-2001, 06:15 AM Actually, I like Windows XP myself. I haven't had any problems with it, and it's rock stable. No crashes, glitches, or anything. I am running RTM Corporate.
Get W2K or XP, but I could probably give you a more specific answer, if you elaborated more on your problem.

He said he's running Win2k, and (in a round about way) Opera is the program that's crashing.
But anyway, does it give any other info when it dies?
What's your system specs?

Did you make sure you downloaded the correct version of Opera?
Does it install ok or does it error daring instalation as well?
How much disk space is avalable? RAM?
sbrad 09-10-2001, 04:17 PM Actually, it's working now.
I sent an issue to Opera support, and this wasn't the first time it'd happened. Here's the response I got:
If Opera 5.12 crashes on startup in Windows 2000, it is possible that it is caused by a conflict between Opera and a program called "eFax". If you have this software installed on your PC, this is likely why Opera is crashing.
To prevent Opera from crashing, you should tell eFax to hide the eFax menu in Opera. If this does not work, there are no workarounds for Opera 5.1x right now, unfortunately. The two possible solutions are:
1. Uninstall eFax
2. Revert to Opera 5.02: http://www.opera.com/download/
We are sorry for the inconvenience, and are working hard to find a solution to this problem.
And he was right. That fixed it.
multipleimage 09-10-2001, 04:21 PM that is weird. I use efax and opera.

But do you have Win2k?
multipleimage 09-10-2001, 04:46 PM yes
sbrad 09-10-2001, 04:57 PM Well, hmm. Don't know then. I know when I made that change, it started working ok. :)

Yeah, me too. Although it took a couple of days. I'd give it a solid 8.

hmm, this is the reason Windows gets such a bad name sometimes, I mean HOW can you possibly blame Windows for this issue? this is why MS are comming up with so many software restrictions because people are releasing crap software that is not to a professional standard, if these two programs crash when used with each other then they are obviously conflicting with dll files which both installed.
did windows work before you installed them, YES, did it work after, NO, you see the situation? :D
im totally neutral of operating systems but it seems people bash MS sometimes when its actually a fault of a 3rd party software vendor.
do you see people going around saying linux is crap when star office conflicts with printers or other software?? I think not ! ;)
sbrad 09-11-2001, 11:42 AM Because it was a Windows error message, which gave NO other information than saying an error occured.
Go back to bed, xstrike. I assure you you don't want to get into an argument over what gives MS a bad name in your condition. ;)
MarkP 09-11-2001, 07:39 PM What other message would you expect it to give?
"The software you've installed has caused an error and as such I have shut it down to prevent problems with other programs so the operating system remains stable" in effect seems OK to me... I don't see how it could be much more intelligent in what it reports.
Fax and TWAIN drivers are notorious for causing problems in Windows, which is why MS introduced driver signing and such like so the operating system no longer gets the blame for crap software/drivers being run on it.
It's a bit like fitting oversize wheels to a car and then blaming the car manufacturer when the wheel bearings/suspension/top mounts wear out.
SoftWareRevue 09-11-2001, 07:48 PM I don't have anything against Win2K.
I use it :D
Now if you want to talk about WinME
That's something I have issues with.
