Only on Windown server I believe, at least that was the case a few hours ago. Was tempted, but veered away at the last second :)

EDIT: Seems the offer is now valid for all servers :)

Can you clue me in on this "deal" ...because I can't find it at SM...free setup, free until December.

Yup, Servermatrix is offering free hosting for the entire month of November. They never had any set up fees to begin with and that is free. I believe you only start paying on on Dec 1st for December's fees. Mighty great deal.

The offer is listed on their main page at
http://www.servermatrix.com/ and on each of the order form for any of the plan it reads

Order a Server today, get the rest of the month FREE

If you enter one of the plans and request for a quote, you will be told that you do not need to pay for this month..

Hope that helps.

I don't believe we have ever charged a setup fee for any of our services. Except maybe to setup a Pix to Pix VPN, but then that really is going out on a limb, and we've done that maybe 2 dozen times since we've been around. Is it fairly normal to charge setup fees? perhaps we could draw in some more revenue that way :-)

I guess in EV1 case, they are actually offering dedicated servers and the machine itself cost money. The prices they are charging monthly for their dedicated machine seems to be really bargain prices and at that rate, they might never be able to recover the original cost of investment no matter how cheap the hardware is. The set up charges (apart from the $1) would probably be used to recover part of their investment for the hardware and probably use as a deterrent for anyone who wants to abuse the system. When you need to pay for something, you tend to treasure it more. So by making you pay a set up charge, it is less likely that the customer would just sign up one month and terminate the next. They probably want to maximize the setup charges and stay on a little longer.

With virtual accounts, you can sell several more accounts to make up for the cost of investment. But with dedicated machine, what you charge in the beginning is all you ever going to get. That is probably why upgrades are costly.

Personally I would assume that most Dedicated Server/co-lo companies have some semblance of churn in the sub base, meaning that for every couple that sign on, 1 cancels, and with the cost of hardware these days you can buy a very decent box for $400~ depending on the frills, so if you charge say $79/month, its not very long until your investment is paid off, especially depending on the size of the ISP, and the volume.

When a subscriber cancels (at least with a decent server) they most likely dont pitch it in the dumpster, they re-format it and fire it back up (unless there are hardware issues, i would imagine) Sure they would have to buy some hardware but once you get to that size it would be marginal.

Just a correction, you have to pay December's fee on the day you order it. If you ordered today, you would be charged for the month of December immediatley and receive the remainder of November for free.

Still a great deal, but wanted to correct that so people were not expecting to not have to pay anything at time of order.

True.. It was a deal I missed by a few days but nevertheless still a good deal even though I did not get it ;)

Matt, thanks for the corrections.
