I use it on my site, and I frequent fordpower.net that uses it. So I keep pointing at threads for the preview, but vB2 doesn't have that feature. :o

I hope that the user can disable that option. I hate those little floating previews when I mouse over a topic.

Probably only when RC 1 comes out, will WHT consider it. That's scheduled to be released near the end of this month.

What with a DDoS attack? If so don't call them hackers, they don't deserve that term.

Hackers are extreme... some good, some bad (known as white hat hackers and black hat hackers respectively) White hat hackers are usually your security experts trying to protect networks.

Hackers pretty much know their way in to most systems and write their own software (usually in C) to break in.

People who exploit and use programs written by hackers are known as script kiddies.

Hackers are good people on the whole, the term used for those 'bad hackers' is 'crackers' :).

Is it the preview feature that you are mainly discussing (rather than the upgrade?), and if so, since you have it on your board, what about the issue of decreased page views -if it is an issue? on another car forum I visit, I know that if they didn't have that preview thingy, I'd be clicking on a whole lot more threads. I suppose it's just a teaser but...

Well,

I say,if it isnt BROKE,dont fix it..

It's really up to Prohacker to decided and from having discussions with him I don't think we shall be upgrading until at least 3.1.0 is released.

Thank you rochen,

Well said......

heh As soon as I hit "submit" I knew somebody would inform me of the differences between hackers and crackers. :D

I suppose it's just a teaser but... I'm not concerned w/ increasing my thread view count on my board. On fordpower.net and stangnet.com, there are so many threads that I find it handy to decided if I should click the thread or not.

Thats likely right..

There are major hacks that we run that keep this community going. And porting those hacks to vB3 will take time and testing... Also I see there will likely be several 3.0.x releases before it comes to be a good stable product...

There is a hack for v.2 that allows you to get a preview box (kind of like when you hover over a html link) and it gives a short preview.

Sort of like a <a href="$threadurl" alt="$desc">$title</a>

www.somethingleet.com/forum has that feature and it runs vb2.

Actually, that isn't a proper use for the ALT attribute. The ALT attribute is to be used for browsers that can't render pictures (browsers for the blind, Lynx, etc.)

The correct thing to do is to use TITLE= instead. That will get you the popup without breaking web standards.

:homer: D'oh!

I was thinking of images with "alt".

I have vB 2.3.2 because the skin's not compatible with vb3. They probablly won't upgrade until vB3 Final is released :. I belive their release is RC 7 / beta 7.

But I do hope WHT upgrades. This may seem minor but am almost sure when I had beta7 installed I could post and do bold, italics, and other stuff just by highligthing the word instead of typing it in the popup box.

phpBB does this and I'm surprised vB doesn't.

vB3 has a WYSIWYG editor so you can do stuff like that...

But its very unlikely WHT will be upgrading any time soon.. Remember its not even in RC yet.. I doubt it will be final till after the first of the year...

Slow and steady with these kinds of upgrades please. :)

Agreed. The latest and greatest isn't always the best - especially before it's been tried and tested.

I agree. The software on my mboard is IPB 1.2 although 1.3 is out, although it's a beta version at the moment. One of these days I should probably migrate to VB.

I'd love to see vb3 used here, it's a LOT better than 2.x.
I can understand why it's not at the moment, as it's been said, there's a LOT of mods to this forum, and the theme/style alone would need a lot of work just to get it going.
I wouldn't really be surprised if somewhere there was a beta version of WHT out there actually trying out vb3, testing the mods and whatnot ;)

Well there isn't :D

vB3 has a long way to go before I trust it in a production enviroment. They haven't even released the final skin yet and they are still hoping for a final by the end of the year last I heard.. Good luck :D

Yeah, they've moved that release date so many times it's not funny. I think it's a big ploy, and that we'll never see vb3 stable!! :dgrin:

my board is using vb3 now... theres pros and cons...

pros comes with lotsa new functions...

cons comes with slower speed and not as good as vb2 performance

overall i will only grade 6/10 for vb3 and 9/10 for vb2

still waiting patiently for vb3 Gamma...

here's our little discussion thread :

Visual effects aren't worth the upgrade, especially since WHT uses the intense amount of resources that it does. Prohacker is a pretty sensible guy, so don't hold your breath for the wait ;).

I'm in no hurry for it to get here. I find the Admin panel bloated beyond function.

What exactly is the difference in using TITLE and ALT tags in <a href=". . .>? :cartman:

[Edit: Fixed punctuation.]
