Hi there,

We are busy with hosting performance tests for one of our clients, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa. They are currently on a virtual hosting package, but we plan to move them over to a RaQ 4i server.

Their current site (on a Sun Solaris server) can be found at http://capetown-waterfront.com/ , and the test site (on a RaQ 4i) can be found at http://waterfront.host24.com/ .

Do you mind visiting both sites, and letting us know whether there is any visible performance difference between the 2 sites? We would also like to know from what country you are browsing.

Thank you for your time,

Johan Pretorius

I just manually visited each site, as well as ran a few software I have on my PC. I noticed that the test site on the RaQ4i far out performs the SunOS (Solaris) server. I noticed that the RaQ4i site loaded a few seconds faster. As for pings. I ran 10 pings on each server. The average for the SunOS server was 162ms, while the average for the RaQ4i was 66ms. This most likely has to do with the RaQ4i being on the much faster RS network while the SunOS server is on a much slower Adgrafix network.

As for my details:

I'm located in Southern California, USA. I'm connected to the net via a TW 2MB cable line.

Hope this helps.

Reg,

Thanks - we expected the sort of results you've just mentioned.

The RaQ is in Texas (Rackshack), and the Adgrafix server is in London (UK). People in Europe are getting a slightly faster response from the existing site, for obvious reasons ...

There are a lot of factors in play here:

- geographic location of the server and surfer

- server connectivity

- server size and load (the Adgrafix server might be bigger than your average RaQ, but serving a lot more sites). The RaQ server we're using for this test is not that busy.

- browser connectivity (ISP, type of connection, speed, etc)

Thanks so far - we are watching this with great interest :)

Johan,

I have just tested from the UK using our ISP, Freeserve, at 33.6k. We get both versions of the index page in around 1 minute, interestingly the RaQ version was marginally faster though this was a one off test.

Let me know if you would like to test our RaQ which is based in London and connected via Level 3 .

Interesting - we found the same with this site: http://airlines.afriqonline.com. It is now on the same RaQ as the Waterfront test site, and used to be on a free host in the UK.

And thanks for the offer, but we are going to use a RaQ in the USA anyway. One of the concerns was that people from Europe and the UK would experience a much slower response becuase of that. I'm glad to say that it is not the case :)

The response from South Africa is pretty much the same for both.
