Bill seems to think Alabanza is getting the crap DOS'd (Denial of Service'd) out of them as all the DNS is croaking among other things. Laci 09-20-2000, 02:49 PM How does a denial of service attack happen? *ponders this is a lesson I need to learn to advance to god/ess hood* :P Félix C.Courtemanche 09-20-2000, 03:54 PM DOS: (denial of service) Basically think in terms of water... someone is flooding a server or a network with queries. Lets say that the network is a huge pipe in which the water flows. A DOS will cause the pipe to overflow, thus dropping extra water. This, in terms of internet, will slow down the line speed if theya re maxed out, and can possibly put servers to their knees because they have to reply to every queries... Basically, when not taken care of, a DOS can make a server crash. There is no danger for the data inside, but for the overall connectivity. DDOS: (distributed denial of service) Same as above, but coming from several (as in a lot) different sources. This will generally be much faster and a lot more annoying. (Remember when yahoo was shut down?) (Remember when yahoo was shut down?) Yes I remember when Yahoo was shut down..that actually worked to my benifit LOL I was bidding on a yahoo auction when it happened because of the attack no one could out bid me *Evil Grin* DynastyHost 09-20-2000, 04:05 PM Umm... sorry.. your application for Goddess has been denied :) NO evil thougthts :) LOL BC 09-20-2000, 07:28 PM ROFLMAO @ Dana! Vewwy funny..... But vewwy naughty too. I daresay you'll have to be much 'purer' in thought if you want goddess-hood :D (j/k) Annette 09-20-2000, 07:33 PM I doubt very seriously that this was a DOS attack, especially given that there seemed to be a looping issue, router-side, and since there was no target (that is, no specific address(es) targeted). BC 09-20-2000, 07:44 PM Don't know whether it's sheer co-incidence or not (since some are suggesting that Frontier might the source of the problem), but about 45 mins into the outage, Frontier over here in Australia also dropped out for around 2.5 hours, due to a faulty switch (my company co-los with Frontier, as does Yahoo! Oz, YellowPages, Altavista, etc. etc.).... I believe they were inundated with calls. cbaker17 09-20-2000, 08:00 PM I know here in Wichita, KS one of our T3 lines went down for about 30 mins, maybe the problem was further down the pipes??? Gavin Northey 09-20-2000, 08:32 PM The DOSing seems to have affected the pipe from FGC to the west coast becuase I couldn't get on to any East cost based sites but I could get onto Yahoo, MSNBC, ect, etc on the west coast (I am in Alaska) Vinay 09-20-2000, 11:55 PM the yahoo case was a dDoS ... same concept, larger scale :) -------------------------- myONLYhost.com: nuff said (http://www.myONLYhost.com) akashik 09-21-2000, 01:39 AM maybe it's the end of the world *lol* Just not quite the way we all got taught. :) Greg Moore http://www.akashik.net |
