Software raid or hardware raid?

The 'BOOT+Root+LILO' stuff is probably the trickiest. Best performed with the server by your desk. (Set it up during the install if you can).

Just 'regular' raid on a non-root disk is straightforward enough:

I used this to setup a few servers with 1 non-raid root disk and 3 raid 5'd disks. And I'm quite happy with the performance and reliability of these boxes. In my case if the / disk fails I can get a replacement and be back and running very quickly (all my data is on the raided disks).
