Did you guys had any problems last night around 11:00 PM and 12:00 PM ? I couldn't access my box, or even access WebHostingTalk .. but I could access everything else.

I'm not a host, but I couldn't get through.

I believe there was a router problem which caused a loop in hits directed at any Alabanza server.

(edit)Here's Annette's explanation over at Tips-Tricks - http://www.tips-tricks.com/ubb/Forum10/HTML/000506.html(/edit)

Ahhh...

Knew something was up. I think it happened again on the 18th, as one of my websites averages 4000k a day in tranfers but it was down to 801.

Checked the others and they stats were down that day too.

It worked for me all night. I don't think that it was on Alabanza's side. I did a tracert and it seemed to be fine.

Well, no one said that it was on Alabanza's end, really. The node at 4.1.25.238 happens to be the final hop before packets reach the servers, for us and quite a few others, including people from Oz, U of AZ, TX, etc. People that tunneled through BBN didn't notice anything at all, naturally, and we saw them pop in and out of the site as we had HC up the whole time. But while all this was going on, anyone who went through that path couldn't get to any Alabanza host - and I do mean any host. I have traces and pings on a number of different Alabanza-based hosts, from two different ISPs, and they all show the same thing. They happen to use the same route, so both were SOL. At some point in those four hours, it reached the point where domain names woudn't even resolve any longer. This afternoon we had another 10 minute period where we couldn't reach anything.

The part that irritates me the most is that we called Alabanza this afternoon when this latest problem occurred, and the girl that answered said that she thought it was a "scheduled outage and they just didn't tell anyone". I don't mind problems. It happens, and you move on. But trying to blow smoke up my ass does not make me happy. And if it was planned and nobody thought to mention it to the hundreds of hosts who come through that route, it makes me even less happy about the whole thing.

There, that's better. Hopefully we'll be back in the same position we were before, with a calm sea and clear sky (for all you boating buffs out there).

I agree.

Does anyoen know of any program where I can run it off my desktop to keep track of downtimes from my server?

Not from your desktop, but a third party service:

Netwhistle (http://www.netwhistle.com) will do this, and email results to you if it is unable to locate a resource, and then email you again when that resource is back online.

Greetings,
I would just like to clear up the issue of the network outage that was experienced on the evening of 9/19/00 and again for a short time in the afternoon of 9/20/00. On the evening of the 19th one of our primary routers failed. This router is connected directly to a backbone. This failure caused us to lose about 50% of traffic. The outage occurred between 11:00 PM and 2:00 AM Eastern time at which time it was resolved. On the afternoon of the 20th we experienced a similar outage, but this lasted only approximately 5 minutes. We will be replacing the problematic router and will continue to monitor both routers very closely for any signs of problems over the next several days.
This problem only effected around 50% of the connections so many people did not experience this problem however those people who did experience problems may have experienced anything from an unusually slow connection to no connection at all.
This problem was hardware related and should be completely resolved when the faulty hardware is replaced.
We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as we work to resolve this issue.

Sincerely,
Alabanza_Dan
