View Full Version : Backup solutions with only one server
Franki 09-05-2001, 07:44 PM I have heard many backup solutions when someone has two or more RaQ's. Tar the files, zip them and send them via FTP from one server to the other. What about the people -like me- who have only one RaQ? We have the tar.gz backup files in the server. How reliable is this way? Any other better solution?
Franki 09-05-2001, 07:46 PM Sorry for the wrong thread title. It should be "Backup solutions with only one server". :)
<<MOD NOTE: Fixed.>>
dherman76 09-05-2001, 08:26 PM You should sign up with a backup service such as RaqServices.com and have them backup your files daily/weekly/monthly to their servers. This way, its offsite and you don't worry about backing up.
RescueHst 09-05-2001, 08:56 PM Sounds like a good idea....
but RaqServices.com is a dead page :bawling:
dherman76 09-05-2001, 09:15 PM Works for me fine, raqservices.com
RescueHst 09-05-2001, 09:33 PM ahh... their re-direction server was down when I went to it...
Got the "new" microsoft cannot be found page.
Here is the direct link for anyone else that has problems.
https://www.globalwebspace.com/ssl/www.raqservices.com/index2.php
Search freshmeat.net for backup scripts. I have a CP/WHM based box and I do my own backups. I just backup certain directories then ftp them over to my computer. I then burn weekly images of my machine.
madsere 09-05-2001, 11:04 PM $160 per months?
I'd just rent a second system from RackShack for $99. That way I also have a spare system if for some reason the system should go poof.
Franki 09-06-2001, 04:54 AM Yes, I think $160 is too much, when Rackshack is only $99. What about Linux servers? I have found one ISP that gives server for only $49. I don't want speed, etc. but only the hdd. (and the FTP :) ). Will I have any problem in FTPing from cobalt to linux? I don't think so.

I'm not sure, but I took a look at their site and I believe the dedicated server is independet of their backup services. It looks like you should be able to use their backup services on any Raq machine that you have setup (even one at RackShack).
These are the prices that they have listed:
Daily Backup $2.25/Gig - $5 Monthly Service fee
Weekly Backup $2.25/Gig - $10 Monthly Service fee
Monthly Backup $2.25/Gig - $15 Monthly Service fee
If they are a reliable solution the prices don't seem too bad.
dherman76 09-06-2001, 11:22 AM What costs $160 per month??
WorldNet 09-06-2001, 01:47 PM teck,
there are several backup scripts on freshmeat...
none of the ones I found say anything about a the RAQ. Which one are you using?
Nathan
Franki 09-06-2001, 03:46 PM I think that since the backup files are still in the server, you cannot feel safe about your data. If the machine be hacked, these backup files can easily be deleted, like all the other system -and virtual sites- files. So, a secondary backup server is vey important..
webbcite 09-06-2001, 04:01 PM Best backup solution I have found for the RAQ is:
http://www.dnid.de/cobalt/raqbackup/
Works like a charm.
dutchie 09-06-2001, 05:47 PM This looks indeed like the answer to my backup needs, and a lot simpler then Brandonks solution (sorry but couldn't get it to work).
Does anybody else have experience with this script ?

The Monthly fee $160 was on the page, and since the link was to a backup solution I wrongly assumed it was for that.
However for $2.25/gb - presumably per time - one 20 GB disks will cost you ($2.25 x 20 gb x 30 days) $1.350 per month for full daily backups. If you can live with incremental backups you can probably get that down to around $100-$150 - but then we're back at the point where you - imo - are better off renting a second rack and have it standing as a hot backup.
