Does anyone have any suggestions for companies that promote websites and register your website with search engines? I went to Yahoo and found a huge list of them. I really don't know where to start.
I'm looking to spend about $100 max. But honestly, I don't know if that's too much or too little.
Anyway, thanks for the help. So far, this forum has helped me select a web host (Aletia) and I couldn't be happier.

PS: Don' t look at our website because it sucks. I'm in the process of fixing this...
For $100 you can can get good amount of click throughs, about 7-8% on hostsearch.com

That sort of depends on what you mean by "promoting websites." If you just want to get your site submitted to proper categories and the like, you can get away with spending much less. But for a real promotion campaign with a goal of getting good search engine placement, it's way too little.

As a search engine optimization specialist myself, $100 is way to little to get this type of service. However, if you are referring to just having your web site submitted to the major search engines, this can be done for free (even though there are companies that charge money to submit your site to the top 2000 search engines, even though there are only 10 major ones that anyone actually uses, the other 1,990 are completely useless). However, just submitting won't do anything for you but get your site listed with millions of other sites ranking before it.
Search engine optimization is the service that gets the site to rank as close to #1 as possible for the specific search terms that you would like to rank well for, and this service (done by someone who knows what they are doing) usually costs anywhere from as low as 1k, up as high as 10k-20k.

If you have little bit of time -better you spend your money on good software tools like; webposition gold or addweb pro: there are pretty useful, particularly the first one.
Banner exchanges & link exchanges will also pay off; Google keyword ads are a good one to try;
Good luck anyway!!!

You can add your site to dmoz.org . Once it is listed it will also appear on aol...
You can also pay 39$ for inktomi listing.

You can also pay 39$ for inktomi listing. Actually, aol search now uses inktomi for its main search results; dmoz results are used only at the bottom of the page directory-only listings.
Open Directory (dmoz) so far are the main results at Netscape, and the directory results at Google. Good luck, and patience, are needed to get anything new listed.
Regarding Inktomi, remember that theirs are per-page, not site, listings. So $39 will list one page of your site, which usually isn't the best strategy. Additional pages are $25... but there are some places where slight discounts can be found.

dmoz doesnt take too long. I suppose it depends on which catagory you are submitting to. I am an editor for a webhosting catagory and things go prity quickly.

But yes, it depends a lot on the category... many categories are months behind, and many don't even have editors. It's an unfortunate situation that's leading to the Open Directory's loss of relevance, and a subsequent loss of partner sites.
