View Full Version : Registering Domains...
digitalkaze 11-03-2003, 10:27 AM | Does anyone know any good sites to register a domain with, and also would reccommend registering with the same company that is hosting? |
dmaven 11-03-2003, 10:50 AM There are a number of good ones, RegisterFly.com, ev1servers.net, enom etc. Most people would tell you it is not a good idea to register your domains with your hosting provider although some folks might disagree with that. |
| Depends who yopur hosting provider is, although try (if you can, not always easy) to check out exactly what you can do with your domains wherever you register them in terms of nameservers, wildcards etc. E.g. ev1servers DNS does not allow wildcards. |
digitalkaze 11-03-2003, 04:54 PM What are nameservers and wildcards? |
fivefeetflat 11-04-2003, 10:12 AM Wildcards? On Nameservers? Haven't encountered that.

D0mainGuru 11-04-2003, 11:27 AM Your better to buy your domain seprate from your host.
Unless your hosting company gives you control over the domain, this is because if you decided to change host they still have control over your domain. |
digitalkaze 11-04-2003, 01:40 PM The host I am going with, provides domains under another company, a rep. told me that it is a seperate company, although they do network together.... |
CactusCounty 11-04-2003, 02:13 PM digitalkaze, in the long run you're probably still going to be better off registering the name elsewhere. Not saying this is the case in your instance, but I've seen several people burned by such a setup. |

What do you think? |

u6crash 11-05-2003, 11:44 PM I'm sort of encountering the same problem. The last site I had, my host went under, leaving with three months of payment and my domain name. That domain is available again, but I never had a chance to renew it or anything. |
u6crash 11-05-2003, 11:48 PM Okay, I'm going to add to digitalkaze's questions...
If registering the domain with another company, does the site need to be hosted with a dedicated static IP? I've been looking at hosts and seems I can get a static IP for around $2-$10 extra per month. Is that worth it or have I opened a whole bag of beans I don't need to worry about? |
digitalkaze 11-05-2003, 11:50 PM The host can provide you with the same service, although I have heard IPs were mostly for older browsers... |

I think you're getting a bit mixed up.....Just about any host offers a static IP, except for maybe the ripoff artists that try to run a hosting company/server on their ISP's line.
If you register the name it can be hosted wherever you choose. Period. It doesn't matter where you register it unless you go to a con artist that ties you into hosting and registration without the option of moving. |
