View Full Version : Questiong for all hosts about Ikonboard?
LastActionHero 09-05-2001, 07:59 AM Have you ever had problems with Ikonboard using too much resources on your server? What do you think about the new Ikonboard which has been completely re-written?
Any personal experiences. People always keep telling me that Ikonboard uses up too much server resources.
klisis 09-05-2001, 11:31 AM No matter how well a forum software is wirrten, it will suck up considerable amount of server resources when the forum is handling considerable amount of traffic.
Klisis is correct. By the way what IB version are you reffering to?
JonathanH 09-05-2001, 04:50 PM I think that Ikonboard is more well-behaved than some of its cousins - UBB, etc. However, as the previous person posted, large amounts of traffic equal huge amounts of server resources, no matter which board you use.
Ikon is a very good board, I don't know why people say it sucks much resources for me it didn't make a slight difference.
newguy 09-05-2001, 07:01 PM once Ikonboard Gold comes out with mysql it shouldn't use as much server resources.
I think it will cost $200 for a lisence.
LastActionHero 09-06-2001, 12:10 AM I'm referring to iB 2.1.8 and the newest version iB 3.0 (still in final beta)
So iB Gold will not be a free version?
Don't you think hosts go overboard when they that "your ikonboard based forum is using too much server resources" even for a medium sized board. It is as if web hosts are paranoid about their customers installing IB.
JustinK 09-06-2001, 12:23 AM Many probably are, because if one does take off and starts sucking up the resources on a shared server they're not only going to have to deal with the person running the board, but the tons of other people on the server ticked off because their sites are running slow or not showing up. It's just easier to ban such possible resource hogs.
"It may be easier, but it sure is a turn off when looking for a host."
To some maybe (no, I didn't quote anyone, just foreseeing what was to be said), but when you see that you should realize the rule is there to protect your site and the performance of the server.
LastActionHero 09-06-2001, 12:46 AM On a raq it is acceptable to ban sites that use iB, but on a decent Linux/FreeBSD box?
"It may be easier, but it sure is a turn off when looking for a host."
Well that is acceptable and reasonable. But the very same hosts don't have a problem when a board like PHPbb or any board based on php/mySQL is installed. What matters is good coding not whether you have coded in php or not. Sure php helps but iB with mod_perl is as fast as php. I think host's overlook the fact that iB's coding is very good.
indiboi 09-06-2001, 01:33 AM the one thing that has me personally annoyed with ikonboard is the more than common "i can't delete such and such" because it was created by "nobody" as people are installing and then subsequently uninstalling beta for ib3. the requests have become excessive to such a point to where i've considered banning ikonboard in addition to UBB and YaBB.
MCHost-Marc 09-06-2001, 02:09 AM From personal experience ...if you run 5 vBulletin's or 1 IkonBoard, they will eat up almost the exact amount of resources. IB is very very poorly written ...
I may be putting this wrong, but this is what I've heard about IB.
I remember reading that if you have "mod_perl" installed on your server, then it's possible to keep the load down. Without "mod_perl" compiled in, the script opens a lot of processes at once which can be very hard on the server. As far as I know, I haven't seen many shared hosting solutions that provide "mod_perl" as they say it causes some older perl scripts to break. Now I could be totally wrong about this, but it's what I've heard...
