View Full Version : Stopping Spam
EpicServers 11-02-2003, 06:20 PM I've finally decided I'm tired of recieving the same spam day in and day out. I get these emails from a different source everyday, with a bit of a different information at the top, then it goes into:
"We Do What Viagra Can't"technologists.examiner.maximize
*GAIN UP TO 3" IN LENGTH IN JUST WEEKSexpansions.scowl.cosine
*BECOME THICKER AND FULLERmetronome.acclimate.policeman
*MULTIPLE, MORE EXPLOSIVE ORGASMSadjuncts.practicably.athens
*ENDLESS STAYING POWERmerging.crayon.executing
*SAY GOODBYE TO PREMATURE EJACULATION
*BOOST TESTOSTERONE LEVELS
*INCREASE CONFIDENCE AND VITALITY
please visit our web site click here
I've taken myself off these lists, even though I never submitted to them. I finally checked the whois information and its from someone in China.
I looked for the person that hosts this spammer, but havent found anything.
What can I do? legal actions? I'm really sick of this.
Hi,
if you own the (e.g. Linux-) server you're fetching mail from, install Spamassassin (http://www.spamassassin.org)!
It's a great tool and it learns quite fast which mail is spam and which isn't :D

xyzulu 11-02-2003, 07:10 PM spamassassin all the way. Blocks all my spam with a 99.9% accuracy rate.
NewtSys 11-02-2003, 08:35 PM you might also try using spam-blocker if you are using AOL or even outlook from a windows box.
One hint for you: clicking on REMOVE ME FROM LIST on the bottom of most spam is a scam. It only tells the people that you are a live email account therfor they can really spam the crap out of you then.

Very good point. NEVER click! best rule usually.
Jakiao 11-02-2003, 08:39 PM As for legal actions? Unless you live in the UK, you can't do jack. America is even leaning towards allowing spam.
choon 11-02-2003, 11:44 PM For me, besides using RBL... I also put those IP addresses found in those spam message headers in my block ip list then use iptables to block those ip addresses.
Oopsz 11-02-2003, 11:55 PM 99.9% means that it blocks one legitimate message for every hundred spams? Considering my mailbox volume, that's not good enough...

Could be.... though it wasn't really specified.
Acecool 11-03-2003, 04:53 AM Meaning it blocks 99 out of 100
or 999 out of 1000
Burhan 11-03-2003, 06:12 AM If you get spamassasin working, use that with procmail and send offending messages to /dev/null
Good thing about spamassasin is that it adds stuff to the headers when spam is detected, and those headers are easy to detect using filtering programs (like procmail).
Also, the percentage means 99 spam messages will be blocked for every 100 you receive.
Which is better than nothing. Would you rather recieve 1 every 100, or 100 every 100 :P

Be careful with that! Do this only with those mails, which are very certain spam. The others may need to get checked manually (esp. in the first 1/2 weeks). There's a nice example how to decide which mail is almoust certainly spam (an may be written to /dev/null): http://spamassassin.org/dist/procmailrc.example

You mean 99 out of 100 or 990 / 1000. ;)
linux-tech 11-03-2003, 07:05 AM There are a number of ways to stop spam:
A> RBL's. These are your friends. Just do NOT use spews, as it is nothing but a pain.
B> Spamassassin. This can be easily configured to adjust headers and block mail that's above a certain spam "number"
C> Get a real mail client. Outlook and Outlook Express don't do anything for scripting and spam. What I suggest is something like pocomail (http://www.pocomail.com) which can be configured to block spam, automagically send reports to spamcop and so very much more.. It's your best friend when it comes to !spam.
D> Become active in the antispam community. Support people like spamcop that actually do the job they should, get an account (paid or not), pass the word about their great service.

yes, but that still doesn't say if it's
1) blocking 99% of spam
2) classifying 99% of all emails correctly as spam
there's a difference!
sprintserve 11-03-2003, 10:28 AM Try this:
http://www.cloudmark.com/products/spamnet/
It has a central database where all the users contribute what constitutes spam and spam is blocked based on that. Last I tried, their outlook express version was in beta (and still is) and is a bit buggy. But it has promise.
orama 11-03-2003, 12:55 PM Use SpamAssasin for linux
Or I will recommend to you mailwasher, have a look at www.united-albania.com (http://www.united-albania.com) where you will find a link for their site. It is a desktop program that i used and after one week i have a great result. I have no more messages from these spammers
