View Full Version : <whinge> I'm sick. AGAIN. </whinge>

Those bloody antibiotics do me no good....... I've been suffering the flu on and off for the last 3 weeks, and been really struggling to cope with the heavy amount of work I've been faced with. Today I went back to the doc and he said I was suffering from another cold strain and I should restrict myself to bed. AGAIN.

Which means I get even further behind in schoolwork + other work as well. <sigh>

Not even the med certs are really useful, since apparently my University only considers 'extended sick leave' (read: avoiding lectures/tutes for 2 weeks or more, which I haven't done because I've been trying to keep up) for special consideration.

As our local Yellow Pages ad would say.......

"NOT, HAPPY, JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!"

:bawling:

I'm back to bed. Night all (even though it's only about 20 to 7 in the evening here!!!)

If you actually are suffering from influenza, I'm not surprised that antibiotics wouldn't help you. They don't help against viruses, remember?

Trusting, however, that your doctor wouldn't have prescribed them unnecessarily, I'd have to say 1. don't bother with vitamin C, it's useless, and 2. while you can't do much to speed up your recovery from this illness you can avoid secondary infections -- so keep warm and *drink lots of hot liquids*.

antibiotics are useless nowaday - almost everything is immune to them now.. which is a shame :)
Still Doctors give them to shut up patients "he gave me nothing and im sick"

Ah well.

I have had flu strain for around a week now and im utterly buggered by it, sick of being in bed so been to the gym the last few days - going to sweat it out :)

Garlic.. and *lots* of it. Trust me, it works every time.

Sometimes the old tricks work the best.. :) I haven't had the flu in years even when people around me are dropping like flies.

akashik... why are people dropping like flies? Is it because they are sick, or because of the garlic? ;)

hehe, maybe a bit of both :D

But if it IS the garlic at least they'll topple over without the sniffles.

What you need is Demazin NS repetabs. It's the only thing I ever use. Wonderful stuff!

Go see a naturopath.. no kidding i used to be a skeptic but ever since i started seeing on, i have gotten more answers to health concerns than my doctor. Antibiotics are good in certain cercumstances, but natural is excellent.. go to a naturopath and ask for Astrogalus, or whatever they recomend.

Actually it's not so much useless as just useless if you aren't getting either (a) a healthy diet or (b) all the other vitamins required to be able to assimilate all the other vitamins and minerals you're taking.

I didn't know it before but apparently Vitamin C requires Iron to be able to assimilate it... Oh and if you take those mega tabs expect nasty long trips to the loo... Not pleasant.

Personally I vote for the "sweat the bugger out" approach. Works for me. :D

Hope you feel better soon

Well, I finally got out of bed for more than an hour today..... Which hopefully signals that the thing is on its way out....... Also nice to see some interesting discussions on various tactics.....

eva + WebSnail : I've actually kept up my Vit C doses right up for the last 3 months knowing winter was on the way, and considering I'm also a big red-meat eater it didn't seem to do much difference. :bawling:

I tried the 'sweat the bugger out' approach yesterday by pounding the pavement but apart from some temporary relief from my blocked nose it didn't seem to do much...

D.Phil Wannabe : actually that was what I said to the doc, and his response was : "I know that. It just so happens that your flu has opened up a chest infection so that's what it's there for." He's got me on to a stronger antibiotic to see if it helps.

Greg : I'm also a big exponent of garlic too; unfortunately I keep forgetting to buy some! <argh> Is garlic bread (the type you make yourself, not the generic supermarket variety) a suitable substitute?

acetate : beer? vot is beer?!?!?!? :stickout

Studio : the amount of water I've been drinking has been amazing...... I think I'm averaging more than 3 litres a day (about 3 times my usual intake)... It seems to be helping slightly, though the frequent trips to the loo are a bit annoying..... ;)

Haze : I'll try a naturopath next time.... Thanks for the suggestion!

End result? Well my nose is nearly unblocked (permanently it seems), and I actually feel something near normal for the first time in a week. Only thing I have to deal with now is this horrible cough spasming every 3 mins or so + the phlegm that's coming up too........ :(

When I had it, I beat it in 3 days. The second day was the worst. I took plenty of NyQuil (with a continued side order of Tuanca(sweet tequila), and kept myself wrapped up in an electric blanket. I slept like the dead and had really weird recurring dreams during that time, but hey....I beat it in 3 days :-)

Maybe 4 days if you count the first and last few hours...but 3 days of the bad stuff.

:D Only Kiwi could manage to plug himself on a thread like this :D

Actually one method I've heard and forgot to mention was curry. My GF swears by it and her curries can sure as eggs clear you out some and sweat a few pounds off you as well.

There are however air pollution aspects to consider, and social considerations that follow too. :)

Hot showers/baths, strong mints, a ton of saltine crackers, green tea (warning, must drink lots of regular water as well since tea can dehydrate you a bit)... There's always those vitamins that cost a bundle and do little to nothing. Strong mints usually help out with the nose and any throat annoyances. Also, don't forget plenty of rest matched with plenty of TV & Video games. Do anything you can't to keep your mind off of being sick.

i haven't read full post yet. but after reading your post the first thing came into my mind is, in today's very fast and polluted life our body is getting week from inside. i mean we don't have the power to fight diseases anymore.

i have knowledge of indian exercise called yoga which is very very useful and makes you strong from inside. Flue, backpane, headaches etc. will never come close to you.

ok i am not good narrator and i am very stressed right now so can not write quality post over here. but believe me search on yoga at google.com and try doing it for only 5-10 minutes daily morning and you will never get common diseases.

actually yoga is not only exercise but is a science to keep your self hit and fit. It not only improves your health but also makes you active in your general and sexual life. Yoga is used by millions of people not only in india but around the world.

antibiotics - i don't believe much in these medicines. last year i got sinus attack. I was sick for about 2 months. i get headache every morning and can not work for more time on computer. i tried many doctors and hospitals but couldn't help. Then i searched the net for what i am suffering too and got myself informed what is the condition i am suffering from. then i stop taking medicines and antibiotics and started doing yoga exercise and you won't believe it i become fit within 7 days. Now i do exercise every day for 5-10 minutes and don't take cold drink etc and i feel very healthy.

i am not saying antibiotics and other medicines are useless but there is alternative method available and is that keep your self fit. I go for medicines only when i see there is not much alternative to it.
