and from their own TOS:

2. Customers may not send any email that has not been solicited. If a recipient asks to stop receiving email, the customer must not send that person any further email.
3. Customers are explicitly prohibited from sending unsolicited bulk mail messages ("junk mail" or "spam"). This includes, but is not limited to, bulk-mailing of unsolicited commercial advertising, informational announcements, and political tracts. Such material may only be sent to those who have explicitly requested it.

i hope they go out of business very soon. and die.

spammers are bad, and if companies start spamming people to get clients.. i'm not seeing it very likely that they'll be pulling paying clients for spamming..

I changed the domain contact of all of my domains to domains@ two days ago, seems like not even hours after doing so I started getting spammed repeatedly.

That is just not cool. I guess they don't care about their image to the public, eh?

liquidjoel

They care, but customers sign up anyway without doing research. The offer looks really good to them so they jump at it even though it is spam. That email also looks like an infomercial.

I got one this AM that had me LMAO. Just the first few lines were sufficient to post (typical software spam, but content was funny)

"Greetings, white man! :)
Liberty, then, about which so many volumes have been written is, when accurately defined, only the power of acting.

Low rates on Software"

Gotta admit, first line I've never seen before :D

I did notice a huge decline in spam from hosting companies in the past year. I remember getting spam about hosting and domain registration constantly. now all the spam I get has to do with Viagra, or a treatment that promises to make a part of your body bigger.

It's sad, you guys actually _read_ your spam?

Not all I get, not anymore ;)

I've got a new service part way finished, its a spam and AV filter that sits between the world and anyone's email server. My clients have been _screaming_ for a solution, and I think this is going to fly ;)

It's inspired by barracuda networks solution. I liked the idea, but when I contacted them to buy it I found their implementation.... lacking.... So I had one of our guys start hammering out a solution.

Thats not possible :S , anyway, I remember servercove spamming a box of mine, thats about as far as I can remember. I highly doubt superb.net would ever spam.

A little over a year ago, Haralds Jass (he's a VP or something like that now, I think) sent a personalized spam to me about how I should switch to Superb & resell for them. (He harvested my email from WHT) Needless to say, I never took them up on that offer.

Subject: Special offers on downloadable software, Sales.

Now I don't feel so left out.

Is it still considered Spam when a sales person finds your email address and sends you a personalised email?

I hate spam as much as the next guy, but I look at that as someone contacting a sales lead.

I consider Spam to be bulk email that is sent to a list of nameless people with a generic message.

By definition, a customized email isn't spam. However, some people will still treat it as such. Prospecting is tough, and your choice is to make a phone call or send an email, neither of which is attractive to the recipient. The alternative is to send a professional packet with a custom letter by mail, but that is expensive with not much better results unless you're experienced with postal campaigns.

Right - Spam is usually bulk email. While that might not perfectly fit the definition of spam (the email that I got from Superb), it is UCE (Unsolicited Commercial Email), which is often lumped together with spam in AUP and TOS agreements. In my opinion, harvesting an email address from a website or forum & then emailing them promoting a product is just as bad as spam. I don't mind sometimes, especially if it is referring to something that I posted, but if they just are trying to sell me a product because I'm not currently using their services, then that's a bad marketing tactic and is UCE.

Right on Matt and for purposes of clarity what I received from superb.net was UCE.

Fahd

And so I had replied to David Mow regarding the UCE and today he sends me "another special offer"!

I have seen that one tons of times. What they try to do is con you into giving them your bank account number and check routing number. With this info, they can pull all funds out of your bank account.
