View Full Version : Dot5hosting.com . . . how can they do this?
ozzie123 10-30-2003, 11:35 PM They offer a REALLY low price and they host their server on an EV1 datacenter...
How can they do that?
They offer 8gigs of space and 120gig of bandwith for less than $50 per month!
CrazyTech 10-30-2003, 11:37 PM Well it depends on what setup that they have.
Option A. They purchase and divide up the server at RS. Depending on the setup, it can fairly easily be done to make a small profit.
Option B. Overselling. Probably the most likely of the two.
ozzie123 10-30-2003, 11:40 PM Overselling the ammount of 120gig? Don't you think It's dangerous? I also can't think other way to make it soo cheap.
This is just ridicilous...
CrazyTech 10-30-2003, 11:43 PM It can be dangerous yes, but it's a fairly common practice. Many never use anywhere near this amount, so the odds are against you having much trouble unless you drastically oversell. It can come back to haunt you though.
ozzie123 10-30-2003, 11:45 PM And customer won't bother with this... It ended up they throw us out of business...
And then the customer realized that they are scammed and wanted to go back to their old hosting... unfortunately their old hosting is out of the business because of this practise....
CrazyTech 10-30-2003, 11:47 PM Well unfortunately it comes down to customer education, and many are not aware of this tactic and let greed get the best of them.
I also wanted to clarify that I am not saying that Dot5 does this.
ozzie123 10-30-2003, 11:49 PM No, I know.
It's just a wild guess though...

Option C. Volume rates. dot5, to my knowledge is one of RS's biggest customers, so I would hope that they are getting some better rates.

Volume providers live off small margins. There is only so much room to work with. I really doubt this savings is anything significant.
Also, how do you know they are one of RS largest customers?

Yeah, but combined with RS's already low prices, it shouldn't be tough to get by. They are selling RS's raq for $20 cheaper than RS is, and promoting the heck out of them, so unless this is just a loss-leader a profit has to be in there some place.
No hard facts on them being RS's biggest customer-- I think I just heard this at one point. I think the latest count was roughly 100 servers?
Zak
EQ_Protege 11-04-2003, 02:15 AM They limit you to 50 domains, which is a lot but if you divide that up evenly each account could only have 2.4GB each, and do they allow overselling ?
Unless they are making quite a low profit on these, they are taking a risk which probably-usually pays off.

lol. What, 20 or 30 servers? Big deal. RS wouldn't even notice that tiny drop in the bucket of their many thousands of servers. I seriously doubt that they are one of RS's "biggest customers".
CrazyTech 11-04-2003, 08:42 AM I seriously doubt that they are one of RS's "biggest customers".
I concur. I truly doubt RS is going to offer all of these discounts to anyone for the same reason Bob said above.
NexDog 11-04-2003, 10:31 AM Dot5 - 100 servers? No chance whatsoever.
I got a call from the ev1 DC the other day. I almost fell out my chair. It was a DoS issue and the admin just wanted to let me know what was happening as we were a "priority" customers (just 10 servers there).
The call center spoiled it after when I tried to follow-up the call and they said that "We have no record that a call to you was made. No-one has that authority to call international".
The techs rock but the monkeys in the call center are exactly that.

I thought there was a thread about this at one point. I even remember hearing that Marsh was flying dot5 guy over to meet.

 your kidding me right...if you find the thread please PM me it...I would like to check it out ;)
Mark_TVI 11-04-2003, 03:49 PM Dot5 already owns the EV1 Datacenter (According to Dot5's website) what do they need Robert Marsh for? :D
Sami228 11-06-2003, 09:50 PM Hello Everyone,
Actually according to Ev1Servers Dot5 is their biggest customer. Last time I was with them they owned 85 servers total and that was back in September. Chris the ceo actually did fly down to Houston TX to meet Robert Marsh. How do I know this?? I use to work for them. They had bought 50 cobalt raqs from EV1 at a cheap price for buying bulk. Of course only about 5 raqs had been used at the time. Dot5 in my own opinion is an ok company. However, they have some quirks to straighten out. I guess we will all have to see if they do or don't and that could lead to more success or the end of them.

+ 50 RAQ, at least.
Zak
NexDog 11-06-2003, 11:23 PM Depends is you count RAQ4 as a server. ;)

It never was stated to where everyone can see. We simply asked them at a time and they told us we were their biggest customer. I am not sure if they would say that to everyone, who knows you could ask them who their biggest customer is and see what they say. Also, when I was working for Dot5 we would not show all of our servers instead we would only show the servers that were used for shared hosting. They might end up showing dedicated customers, however most of the servers that were sold back then were unmanaged and therefore not monitored.

Well, HS made a great deal for RS. What better way to off load a hardware/software platform that can't be upgraded. I am sure he was slapping high-fives after that deal.
Also, imagine the margins Dot5 makes on those servers. $10? Tops? Someone posted 5 were sold a while back. I bet it is only at 10 now. Hell. Valueweb is giving them away.

I doubt that they've only sold 10, but I can't claim to know what they profit per server. I would hope that they've sold more than 10 at least.. RS seems to sell the heck out of them though.
Zak
Maybe Robert Marsh is flying Chris over so he can buy his Datacenter back?
Aussie Bob 11-07-2003, 09:34 AM Apparently Dot5 has sold to IPowerweb - http://domineaux.net
NexDog 11-07-2003, 09:54 AM $2million? I don't think so. Worth that in 2 years says he.
mdrussell 11-07-2003, 09:57 AM £2 million - more than $2 million
Aussie Bob 11-07-2003, 10:09 AM I don't get it. The contract says US$20,000.00 was the sale price, plus a salary of $2,500/mth, sales commissions and 10% ownership etc. So Chris would be working for IPowerweb.
I'm confused. :crap:
