![]() | View Full Version : how does web hosting work? smdawg33 10-28-2003, 10:20 PM how is it that you make web hosting work? someone please explain Dan L 10-28-2003, 11:14 PM Well, there are companies which have buildings called datacenters. These have hundreds of computers. One person, or company, rents one or more of these computers, called servers. The datacenter hooks the servers up to the internet so that people can access them anywhere. The company who rents the server makes it so each person has a small piece of it so they can put their site on. They tell the domain name (URL) where the site is on the server, and voila, anyone can go to it. I could be more technical, but I believe this would get the point across. :) Hiranmanu 10-28-2003, 11:17 PM yes it is a major thing and its very detailed smdawg33 10-28-2003, 11:26 PM how many web hosts can i make of 1 computer in my house? cywkevin 10-28-2003, 11:33 PM 1 at best and I seriously wouldn't recommend it. Dan L 10-28-2003, 11:33 PM It's generally not a good idea to do it in your house. See, most Cable and DSL providers do not allow you to host with your connection. There are many more variables, but again, I believe this is straightforward enough. As for how many websites you can fit on each computer, it all depends. If you have a really old Celeron box, around 100. If you have a very new P4 Xeon, you could fit 500. If course, many factors come in to play, but this is simple enough. smdawg33 10-28-2003, 11:33 PM why? Dan L 10-28-2003, 11:35 PM Read my previous post. :) smdawg33 10-28-2003, 11:38 PM ok gotcha. we posted at the same time and i didnt see yours. thanx mindless 10-28-2003, 11:42 PM LOL a short example. The hosting companie takes your money. you get a control panel and some space. and then you get to put up a website CrazyTech 10-28-2003, 11:42 PM Think about line speed as well. At the very least you would need a T-1 and most dcs offer much better lines for less cost in the end. Also consider the fact that most dcs have backup power that can last a while, odds are, you don't. Most people don't have backup generators (at least the ones I know) and even if they do, they'll be busy providing power to other things in an emergency. Hiranmanu 10-28-2003, 11:51 PM do not host from ur house will be silly like the speeds to ur site will be less than 56K if u r usin cable/dsl i wud not advise this |
