Hello,

nearly all server I have tested, that are located in the USA are extremely slow here in germany! I have a ADSL connection but a download speed of about 4-5kb!

I have tested rackshack and a few more provider (rackshack was with 5-6kb the fastest one) but that is still extremely slow! my max is about 85kb/sec. I have also asked some other guys. 2 located in germany with ADSL and one located in Austria with Cable and all have had such a poor speed! :bawling:

Why don't you get a server in Europe then?
It will be much faster for you.

If you are going to target the European market get your server colocated in Europe.

Otherwise, do what's best for your potential customer base.

Can you tell me what is roundtrip time of any server in US.
If possible give me a IP of European and American server I want to see which server is fast from India.

If you are looking at only ping time, then you are in for a rude awakening. Ping time means nothing when looing at network connectivity, speed, etc.

You can have a ping time of 10ms on server A, and a ping of 400ms on server B, and server B can be 5 times faster for you than server A. It is all about the network they are on, not the distance.

You might want to try www.traceroute.org. It offers various traces from datacenters and networks throughout the united states. That may give you a better idea of which networks have better connectivity into Germany and Europe, in general.

FYI, the european marketplace certain has datacenter facilities, but due to the demand in the US on performance and reliability (and some local restrictions) it is not unusual for companies outside the US to want to host their service here. As a side note, it is also not unusual for foreigners with shady operations seeking to make it hard to pursue them legally over international bounderies to want to place servers in the US. Their servers can be confiscated, but they themselves are hard to get to.

It will be much faster for you. yeah you are right. I just got amazed, that the download rates are THAT low from US.

server hosting in europe is unfortunatly much more expensive than in US, expecially the traffic prices (at about $10-$20/gb! :bawling: )

There are hosts in EU with similar prices as in US.

This is not the norm. I am in Greece and with a 64K ISDN connection I regularly download at speeds of 7 Kb/sec from sites in the US. It all depends on the provider. Ping times are not too great (between 250 and 350 ms) but once it starts downloading you don't see any difference from local sites.

As for costs for hosting in the UK i have a deal that i can get a 100Mb connect at Redbus for around 150£/month
with 50Gb of bandwidth.

Hosting here inst as much as it used to be at the start of the year.
Our next server will be in this country - thats for sure.

I've got a box sitting in Los Angeles, and it's fast even from here in Israel. I only have an ISDN connection, but I get 7-8K bps xfer rates and higher.

I am from Austria and one minute ago I tried a download from one of our servers at Verio using ADSL at home -> 36 kb/sec...

Walter, there are days the US connection is extremely fast and days it is very slow. I have tried over the week every day a few hosts. Since friday I also have download rates at about 40kb/sec on rackshack for example. A few days ago I have had no more than 6kb/sec!

The same at a few other hosting companys.

The file you have tried to download: I have had 23kb/sec.
try it every day.perhaps you will also see, that the speed is very unconstant.

Walter,

How do you know it? I see something wrong but didn't know what.
