View Full Version : Please help with 19" monitor choices
The Laughing Cow 09-03-2001, 09:14 AM Ok, ive decided to get a 19" monitor,
few questions-
does the dot pitch make much difference? eg 0.25 0.26 whats better?
what about frequency? eg 75hz
please reply asap since i wanna buy 2day preferably
thanks!
XTStrike 09-03-2001, 09:16 AM the lower the dot pitch the better the picture quality, the crisper the picture and the less it hurts your eyes.
most cheap monitors have a high dot pitch.
go for the lowest possible within your price range
http://www.tomshardware.com should be able to provide you with some indepth info and reviews
The Laughing Cow 09-03-2001, 09:20 AM thanks for the speedy reply.
the one im looking at is here:
http://www.novatech.co.uk/Novatech/SpecPage.html?parameters=stockcode=NOV-1926S'
its 0.26dot pitch. is that much differnce to 0.25?
XTStrike 09-03-2001, 09:30 AM yeah, id try and get a .24 or a .25 dp monitor but if you are going for cost then .26 should be ok and will be cheaper.
if you sit in front of your monitor often id suggest .24 since your eyes are one of the most important things to keep in top notch quality when ur working with computers, dont abuse them by getting a cheap monitor !!
The Laughing Cow 09-03-2001, 09:48 AM cheers.
im trying to find a 0.25 dot pitch < £200 but its not very likely
Chicken 09-03-2001, 11:21 AM I have a 19" KDS Avitron though I'm not sure what the pitch is anymore, nor the refresh rate, etc. Seems to do the job nicely and is sharp. Reasonable priced.
The Laughing Cow 09-03-2001, 11:22 AM cheers i ordered this in the end
19" Proview Digital SVGA (HP 1 £157.00
0.25dot pitch
was £199 inc VAT & delivery
sorry i meant 0.25
XTStrike 09-03-2001, 11:41 AM great, .24 sounds good to me, update us on the monitor once you get it, maybe we can start another board monitorbuyingtalk.com :D
The Laughing Cow 09-03-2001, 11:43 AM lol hehe
will post
reflexhost.com 09-03-2001, 12:22 PM My friend has a Novatech 19" monitor, to be honest its not great. I am very happy with my 19" NEC MultiSync FE950, it was just under £400 when I bought it, but its worth paying the extra...
WebSnail.net 09-03-2001, 06:44 PM Darn, missed this post...
I was looking at 19" monitors a little while ago but found little to lend itself towards a definite buy... It was an off the cuff remark from my GF that pointed me back to improving my current dual head setup.
Did a little digging and discovered that Win2k can handle a LARGE number of monitors all at once so I've opted to get 2 new Mitsubishi 730 pro's and now I'm thinking seriously about copping the old 14" on a bare bones basic PCI 8mb card for email/ICQ/MSN etc... off to one side.
Bottom line, why go for 19" when you can have quality 2x17" and a 14" as extra? for only £100 more :)
coolguy23 09-03-2001, 07:04 PM i want one of those flat monitors the lcd ones:D , are they bad for your eyes?

I can't speak for the rest, but I will tell you that I like my 19" much better than any 17" I've owned. It is just a nice size. I'm not sure which would be better (2x17 or 1x19), but I may get a 17 for the other monitor and try out the dual thing as well.
I think you'd like using a 19 overall. Try it, you might like it :)
Aloha
well just for future ref for people that read this thread
I have 2 19" (use a g450 card on it)
sony g400 (great monitor favorite so far)
viewsonic PF795 (good monitor mroe controls than the sony but still like the sony better)
I like trinitron over mask now that I am running them
I also have a 21 hitachi on the other box that will be going bye bye ina few months to go with a g500 and a g400 dual setup for that
the flat lcd screens are not as good as gun monitors for color yet
some people say they are some not but more against then for
also the price is a lot
although I would like a monitor that is not as large and heavy on my desktop ;)
The Laughing Cow 09-05-2001, 01:12 PM Hey.
well i got my Proview PK monitor and unpacked it. You can see mine here
http://www.proviewintl.com/pdoc/pks.htm#pk986n
im a bit unsure at what resolution and refresh rate i should run it at since i don't know much about these. IT seems a bit grainy on my screen or is that just me?
Any help or advice regarding tweaks or setup would be great thanks
cow ;)
reflexhost.com 09-05-2001, 02:41 PM What GFX card do you have?
I run my 19" at 1280:1024 with a refresh rate of 85hertz, but that is on a GeForce2 card...
And it's crystal clear, not at all grainy.
Matt
The Laughing Cow 09-05-2001, 05:11 PM I have a Gforce 2 MX

You should experiment and see what you like. I run 1280x1024 on my 19" monitor at work, but some people look at my screen and think that everything is too small. I'd recommend running the highest refresh tate that your graphics card and monitor support at the resolution you choose, but the actual resolution is more a matter of personal preference.

A bit late for some of you,
But I highly rec. flat screens -- the glare, especially with flourescent lighting, is significantly reduced -- thus colors appear brighter.
I personally like Viewsonics Professional and Graphic Series monitors.
In the last couple of years, I've purchased about a dozen viewsonic monitors. The GS series are great because they are a lot smaller than other equivalent size monitors.
Here's what we use on our main workstations:
Our newest setup:
Matrox G450
Dual:
Viewsonic G90f
0.21-0.25 dot pitch
1600x1200
Perfectly Flat screen.
Our other dual setup:
Matrox G400 Max
Dual:
Viewsonic
GS790
There is nothing like using duals for web development. Set your preview browsers in one window and your coding tools in the other. Also, with Photoshop, you can put all of your pallettes in one monitor and have the entire work space with the other.
Lawrence 09-06-2001, 02:01 AM I like flat screens too - not necessarily the LCD ones though. I'm using a Diamondtron NF 17". Very clear, little glare and no distortion. The only problem is a couple of very fine horizontal lines about 1/4 and 3/4 way down the screen. But after the first week, it's not something you notice. Apparently it's normal on flat screens?
SI-Chris 09-06-2001, 04:03 AM I have a Sony HMD-A400 (http://www.sonystyle.com/vaio/displays/hmd_a400l.htm) 19". A bit pricey, but an awesome monitor. The screen is perfectly flat with a .24mm dot pitch and sharp from edge to edge. It looks really cool too.

Those lines are present in all Trinitron monitors. I don't remember the exact reason, but it's got something to do with stablizing the picture on a perfectly-flat screen.
JoeMX3D 09-06-2001, 04:47 PM I recently got my Sony G400 19" a few weeks ago, and Im in heaven. Running at 1600x1200x85hz and its outstanding. The text, color, quality is simply amazing. The Dual input feature is a great plus too!
