View Full Version : Live Webcam: Spammer at work
webworkz 10-27-2003, 11:20 PM http://www.spotlife.com/users4/webworkz/webcam
Spawned from the other thread about the guy that sent those "time machine" SPAMS, and on request of Artashes, we are now [hopefully] broadcasting a live web movie of the spammer at work.
You may need to register, but I don't know ... I was just handed the software about 5 minutes ago.
Post here if you need help getting into the cam or if you want to make fun of us.
P.S. the 4 x DS3 pipes will carry your bandwidth, you lame little DSL/cable users. :dgrin:
JamesCC 10-27-2003, 11:23 PM This is what I get when I go to the site.
We're sorry, this broadcaster has not activated their account yet, so this show is not available for viewing. Please check back; this show will be available to view as soon as this broadcaster activates their membership.
webworkz 10-27-2003, 11:24 PM I just activated it.
I need to open ports on our firewall ... trying to figure out which ports now. That, and trying to get the camera in place ..
Give me 10 minutes.
http://www.spotlife.com/users4/webworkz/webcam
JamesCC 10-27-2003, 11:28 PM Cool I get the page now but no picture do I need to down load something?
Not sure if I still have real player installed? It got real screwy with this system after the XP Pro upgrade
sassSE 10-27-2003, 11:33 PM Well, I can pull it all up. Click play and it buffers and then: "This broadcast is off air"
webworkz 10-27-2003, 11:34 PM Working on it. Ignore the beer ... we're in Texas. :)
webworkz 10-27-2003, 11:39 PM The URL now comes up as:
http://www.spotlife.com/users4/webworkz/webcam
NewtSys 10-27-2003, 11:45 PM works for me..... gee you should just route his SMTP traffic to a honey pot server so he thinks the spam is going out :) j/k
webworkz 10-27-2003, 11:46 PM Haha NewtSys ... glad you showed up.
We're working on setting up the camera. THere's nothing to set it on back here, but this damn setup thing only says 60 minutes left in our trial.
He's running Super Mailer v3.33 ... we're about to call him to make sure everything's "ok" with his setup.
Still working on the camera before this test thing runs out.
webworkz 10-27-2003, 11:47 PM Hahahahaha...
"Everything's running fine, thank you."
What a damn moron.
/me goes to get some popcorn :D

heheh yes, I slacked off on my WHT presence today, slacked off at the office too, I closed for the day to get personal stuff done like getting our Toyo heating stove installed and rearranging the living room to accomodate it. (honey-do list I didnt do this weekend due to me working 2 days straight on the install of the XO pipe)
webworkz 10-27-2003, 11:52 PM I've only got 50 minutes on this webcam thing? Damn it.
Anyway, I'm still trying to find a way to mount it ... I don't know if he's touching the box or not, but Dean and I will be in server room #01 [the room you're looking at] for a few more hours. Let me double check this camera hours crap and figure out how to mount this thing so I don't have to sit and hold it.
By the way, the bandwidth graphs look great. What? Are you guys all on dial-up connections or something?! :D
NewtSys 10-27-2003, 11:55 PM lol I am not, I alloted 768/128 to my workstation :) tis all I need
sassSE 10-27-2003, 11:55 PM *gets her popcorn and gets comfy in her recliner at the desk*
NewtSys 10-27-2003, 11:57 PM zip tie the puppy to the back of a chair... or use rubber bands:P
webworkz 10-27-2003, 11:57 PM It still says 60 minutes left. I have no idea what's going on with that thing.
Anyway, rigging up a mounting device now.
Jerry said he sounded tired, so I don't know if he'll broadcast any SPAM tonight, but we're watching him.
... We're all geeks. Sorry, but someone had to say it.
By the way, this is our internal server room. We run our web hosting, DNS, mail, etc. out of here. Any jokes about cleanliness or the amount of empty beer cans will equate to me, or another staff member, hunting you down. ;)
webworkz 10-27-2003, 11:58 PM Newt: The chair is too far back. I'll mount it there again. If you can't see it, let me know.
How many people are watching this right now? I'm trying to get an estimate of the bandwidth consumption. You're on a 40Mbit DS3 pipe right now, which uses about 13Mbits at this time of night, so I'm trying to guesstimate how much you all are using.
webworkz 10-27-2003, 11:59 PM Okay, mounted to back of chair.
That's too far out, with too much glare, right?

webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:02 AM **** there he goes ... let me hold this thing up.
PS I hate you guys. my arm is going to go numb. :(
EDIT: Crap, he just logged out.
etogre 10-28-2003, 12:03 AM It's kinda hard to read any text..exciting nontheless :D
NewtSys 10-28-2003, 12:03 AM tis what you get for being a geek with a quickcam :P
sassSE 10-28-2003, 12:04 AM Ahhh...SuperMailer?
webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:04 AM *goes to find something to mount this dang thing too*
NewtSys 10-28-2003, 12:07 AM hehe check his license key on super mailer...bet it's cracked..lol
EDIT: we caught one using mailbomber pro with a cracked license key.... the spammers are unscrupulous (spelling)
webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:07 AM Obviously, that's not going to work.
We have some conduit in the back alleyway ... I'll cut a piece and duct tape it [or zip tie, whichever comes first].
Yes; super mailer. :)
sassSE 10-28-2003, 12:10 AM Here we all are..eyes fixed between WHT and a webcam...
10pm for me..having to get up at 5:30am and sitting here watching a webcam of a spammer in the works. Gotta love the 'net.

He logged out ... going to leave it up to see if he comes back into the machine. I've got the firewall probe going as well, but he got quiet all of the sudden.
sassSE 10-28-2003, 12:11 AM Maybe he's watching this thread...
*cracks up*
;)
hostpath.com 10-28-2003, 12:11 AM All I see is a monitor with a big white square on it.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:14 AM NEED DUCT TAPE ... HE JUST LOGGED BACK IN
Tropical Tundra 10-28-2003, 12:16 AM Yea same here not much going on.

webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:19 AM AND WE GOT 'EM
WOOT WOOT!
webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:20 AM And the server monitors just went off about his machine being down ... poor baby.
etogre 10-28-2003, 12:21 AM so you nabbed him? call him up and say that he violated your policy on spamming lol
webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:24 AM etogre: DID YOU NOT SEE THE MESSAGE? :D
sassSE 10-28-2003, 12:25 AM All right, it's passed my bedtime. webworkz, thanks for entertaining me tonight. :)
You guys have a good night.
Artashes 10-28-2003, 12:27 AM So what's happening? Did he send spam already or not? This is just so good!
This is how WHT looks right now:

hehehe... I think I actually seen it happen. I logged to your web cam, seen you type messages to WHT community, then I've seen the screen with what seemed e-mail lists, etc. I guess taht was it. Nevertheless, it was hilarious. :stickout:
NewtSys 10-28-2003, 12:30 AM damn I snoozed again
Amish_Geek 10-28-2003, 12:32 AM Shoot, got here too late...
All I see on the webcam is the lower left part of some window with a percent bar on it, sitting... frozen?
I'm glad you got the spammer. :)
webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:34 AM We caught his ass already ... we got him for $125.00 extra dollars:
http://webworkzcentral.com/index.php/page/tos
$225 total dollars for ~2 hours worth of work. :D
Waiting to see if he calls in about his server being down. If he does, we'll screw with him and fire the webcam up so you can watch the machine again.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:35 AM Actually, let me block port 25 outbound on his machine, and then call him back and tell him we had a network outage ... this should be funny.
Give me 10 minutes.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:38 AM Ok, camera is started again. Calling him now.
sassSE 10-28-2003, 12:40 AM Oi! So much for going to bed...
*gets comfy*

Or NOT. Can he ask for a refund if you tell him it was your fault? better not play with it, cause it gets too legal-issue rich.
I know I'm not your mama, buy play safe. :D

webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:47 AM Working on firewall still.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:55 AM He took the bait.
I told him Service Pack #4 wasn't applied properly.
IDIOT.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 12:56 AM Can you guys see the screen alright?

webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:00 AM Now we got the cam setup properly. :D

Nothing like screwing with spammers :D

the cam is down :bawling:

webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:08 AM Well, it looks like the cam isn't coming back up. Working on it now.

sounds like some military spy squad ready to attack or something. ;)
must....go....to....bed....
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:09 AM Got it working. The SMTP server blocked him already.
(Apparently, my port 25 block didn't work ... oh well, we'll just unplug him again).
The Prohacker 10-28-2003, 01:09 AM Oh here he goes :D
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:10 AM Enjoy Prohacker ... you geek.

Working on firewall still.
The Prohacker 10-28-2003, 01:13 AM Next thing you know.. You have a new trouble ticket.. "Help.. I can't connect to outside computers" :D
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:14 AM He's still hunting for an open-relay.
Does that say "Stop SPAM..."?
NE-Andy 10-28-2003, 01:14 AM hm... it's not live >.<

This camera sucks.
Here's an update though: He's timed out on sending to the last 5 open relays he's tried to hit.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:17 AM Originally posted by Alfarin

He's going back to IRC [I'm willing to bet] at the moment, to try and hunt down some more open relays.
I mean the message he's sending.
"Stop SPAM in it's Tracks".
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:19 AM How's the image quality? This is a little USB camera we found laying over in someone's corner office, so the quality probably sucks.
It looks semi-decent from our machine over here, though.
Let me know if Dean, Jerry, or I need to re-adjust the cam.
This is a good show :)
It's been 2 hours since the thread was started 10-28-2003 04:20 AM - now there's 84 replies and 642 views... must be close to a record, the short time span considered?

Three people tending a webcam watching a spammer..
Have you thought about sending a message to the Windows Message Service saying they're a dumbass?
Artashes 10-28-2003, 01:21 AM Jeez, you can see him type a message! I can't. The screen is a bit blurry, but very nicely setup. I can just read a few words...
The Prohacker 10-28-2003, 01:22 AM Originally posted by webworkz

It could be adjusted a bit better.. But then everyone could read the IPs of the open relays :D
That was the only thing I could read.

Ok, how about now? It's tough; but you can see it.

It's a bit hard to read the text, probably mainly due to the limited resolution. If it's possible to adjust the focus, that might improve it... :)
freakb0y 10-28-2003, 01:24 AM Ok, what is this? You guys have a cam hooked up pointing at a guy's monitor in your office who is a spammer, or what?
Sorry I'm dumb and lazy (don't want to read through 7 pages of post to see if anyone else has asked).
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:24 AM He logged out, but I'm willing to bet he's just poking around IRC trying to find an open relay to hit.

Need to stash a program on his server that grabs screen caps every few seconds and uploads them to a remote system :D
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:26 AM I would, but we don't want to touch the machine and give him any clues that we're sitting here watching him.
Can't touch the mouse at all ... let's see if he comes back in.
Haha, this has to be some WHT record. Either for:
a) Most replies in shortest amount of time
b) Most times the thread starter has replied to his own topic.
How often to we get to watch a SPAMMER in action?

Speaking of that, if anyone ever wanted to do that, I found a good free program a while back. SCwebcam (http://tursi.yiffco.com/cgi-bin/onesoft.cgi?4) desktop capture.
Artashes 10-28-2003, 01:31 AM Why is the picture does not change much?
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:31 AM HE JUST LOGGED BACK IN!!!!
Edit: Artashes: He wasn't moving. :)
He just got back from his IRC trip [I'm sure] and tried a new IP. It didn't work, and he logged back out. I'm sure he just went back to IRC to hunt for another open relay.
Artashes 10-28-2003, 01:34 AM This is too good. WebWorkz, could you update please why nothing works for him currently - is that because you blockes the port? So practically everything he tries is a a lost cause.

I have the ports open on firewall. I want his stupid ass to relay some SPAM so I have more proof [I'm logging his tcpdump from firewall] to send to the Massachusetts Attorney General.
I want to see this piece of trash nailed to the wall.
freakb0y 10-28-2003, 01:36 AM But you are watching a remote windows terminal session via a monitor in your office or something, correct?
Damn, I though that I was a geek. ;)
Webworkz, if you run out of "airtime" i just got a few new logitech cams, and i'm pretty sure you get an hour with each, i never use the free airtime they give, so just give me a shout in here if you need it, i'll be around for an hour or so

He's logged in via Radmin, which we installed on the server for him, and he [I think] applied the license too ... Anyway, he's connected that way, and we're busy messing with him, and broadcasting his actions over the internet.
I have all of the logs [based on this thread, the other one, and our firewall] that I need to see his ass hang, by way of the Massachusetts Attorney General.
What we're doing now, is just plain funny. We're waiting for him to log back in and try another *open* relay.

webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:41 AM Hey guys; if it comes up inactive, just hit refresh.

I'm yours for an hour, so to speak
You should call the guy and ask him if he likes fishing... ( many won't get this joke, and i am not explaining it, it's already 3 hours past my bedtime :D )
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:44 AM IHSL: Do you have to register a user/pass? If so, can you PM it to me?
We're having to reboot the webcam every 10-15 minutes to keep it streaming. I don't know if this service just sucks, or if we ran out of time.
In other news; this idiot is having a heck of a time finding an open relay to send his SPAM through.
No probs, i think you have to register once the cam is installed, through the software.. so i'll just throw one on this comp, shouldn't take long
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:46 AM Ignore the hand that pops up every few minutes. That's me trying to figure out if the cam is still active on the web or not. :)
EDIT: Thanks IHSL.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:51 AM I wish I could find the microphone for this thing. Then, I could simply call him back, make fun of him for a few minutes, and ya'll could hear me goofing on him.
How often is it that one of the most well-known spammers in the world gets all of his actions caught on a web-cam, and broadcast to the hosting community? :D
Darn Logitech products take an age to install, and require a swift reboot, check your PM box in a few minutes

To bad radioshack isn't open :D
Of course that could be slightly illegal considering the parties need to know the conversation is being recorded normally :D
Very clear now... :)
So, he's actually spamming to sell anti-spam software? No wonder he's sending it as "high priority" ;)
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:58 AM He's still poking through IRC. I'm sure we sent up a flag with him by calling him back about our "service pack" problem ... just waiting for him to log back in right now.
nmluan 10-28-2003, 02:01 AM Had the spammer smart enough to run a linux box, he could have avoided this humiliation :D
ML
webworkz 10-28-2003, 02:06 AM Got it IHSL ... I appreciate it.
He's obviously having a problem finding an open relay to hit. We're sitting here watching him. Our facility is 24/7, so he won't pull a damn thing without us seeing it.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 02:20 AM He's still hunting for open-relays. I'm almost feeling like he needs a callback for some stupid reason].

We're all out of reasons over here.
EDIT: Prohacker; read your PM's ... I need a reason to call him back, and Dean, Jerry, and I are out of ideas... C'mon and give us something.

You should work in politics ;)
The Prohacker 10-28-2003, 02:28 AM Then blame it on a faulty network cable.. Faulty NIC.. Maybe a bad switch port :D
webworkz 10-28-2003, 02:29 AM That's too obvious ... come up with a reason he's having a problem, or could be, and we'll call him back.
Artashes 10-28-2003, 02:30 AM Ask him you usually give a call-back to your new customers asking if everything is all right, servers are fast, service is good, blah-blah-blah...
Ask him what he would more likely improve, etc.
An email along the approximate lines of prohacker's statement may be safer, but throw in a network issue, as you can make it sound like it's not limited to one server, and therefore less see-through

"We have recently had numerous complaints with outbound connectivity issues and we are calling our customers to help determine immediately which segments of our network are having issues. Since you are a new install we want to insure your deployment will work properly the first time. We beleive this to possibly be an IGRP routing issue, or a possible mistrune firewall rule"
Too obvious now? :D
webworkz 10-28-2003, 02:32 AM We need a reason that he *might* be having a problem.

The Prohacker 10-28-2003, 02:38 AM "In the past 2 hours we have had numerous complaints that sporadic network connectivity issues have occured within our network. We are attempting to isolate the issue and determine the cause, but the issues seem to occur on random segments. We are calling all customers to determine if they are having issues and document where their server is located to aid in finding the quickest remedy for this issue. Blah Blah Blah dumb spammer blah blah"
:D
webworkz 10-28-2003, 02:39 AM "Your kind is like a cancer, you son of a b**** ... I want to choke the life out of you."

webworkz 10-28-2003, 03:08 AM Robert is our little spamming friend.
Artashes 10-28-2003, 03:09 AM I got the number too now. Was it you live? Wow... You are a natural reporter! I mean, paper holder... :D
webworkz 10-28-2003, 03:12 AM Yes, it was me.
Seriously; If you know your **** about networking/servers, call him and tell him that there is:
"An SNMP issue which was prevented us from monitoring your server."
If he asks what the means, say:
"We monitor all internal traffic on SNMP, and your machine does not appear to be responding."
"We are monitoring your SMTP and web serving ports, and you do not appear to be responding. Did you reboot the machine?"
No!
"Ok, we have a network issue. We'll work it out and call you back shortly."
... Let's see if we can wake him up? :D
I HATE SPAMMERS. GET 'EM BOYS. Let him sue us. I'll show him what a little bit of corporate $$$ and a bad attitude can provide him with.
And I grew up in New Jersey and will be visiting there in a couple months. The drive to Mass. isn't exactly long. In fact, we have some customers up there that would love to meet me face to face.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 03:13 AM And please ignore the fact that I am drinking and spitting chewing tobacco into an empty beer can.
I hate you too. :D
Mekhu 10-28-2003, 03:14 AM lol "we got us a spammer" :D
The Prohacker 10-28-2003, 03:15 AM You can either act professional.. Or break into a Matrix kinda thing... Robert.. I can't speak long but you are in grave danger and there are only two ways out of this.. Out through the window or in their custody. It is your choice. :D

darkpunk99 10-28-2003, 03:16 AM Grrrr... it's still not loading for me. spotlife.com isn't responding to pings either. Maybe resetting my modem/router and rebooting my computer will do the trick.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 03:16 AM Let's call him again.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 03:20 AM Nothing ... see the webcam:
"STOP SPAM IN ITS TRACKS!!!"
What a damn joke.
PS: nobody likes Artashes. :D

G'nite all.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 04:15 AM Haha, alright guys: I shut the webcam down. The only people left in the building are in server room #02 [I'm still in #01].
Going to pop in and say goodnight to them and pull his ethernet plug.
Hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. If he calls in tomorrow, I will be putting the cam back online for everyone to enjoy. :dgrin:

s.h.a.zz.y 10-28-2003, 11:14 AM *waits for part two of this episode to begin.
webworkz 10-28-2003, 01:42 PM He just called in and claimed that it is an opt-in list that he bought, and that it sends through his mailserver is Australia.
I guess he's not just going to cut his losses, so I'll go ahead and slap together some information and start sending out notices to the companies he attempted to relay through.
... Stupid spammers ... always have to make things difficult.
NE-Andy 10-28-2003, 03:28 PM heheheh... opt-in lists....those stuff NEVER exist...who's dumb enough to let someone resale their email address to spammers like this?
webworkz 10-28-2003, 09:31 PM We told him to prove that he owned all of the machines that he was trying to relay through in Australia and we would plug him back up.
Hahahaha ... yeah, imagine that.
you know what would be funny... if he actually proved it :P
Mrdredd 10-28-2003, 10:14 PM How much was he paying?
webworkz 10-28-2003, 10:59 PM $100.00/month ... he lasted less than 24 hours.
sassSE 10-28-2003, 11:13 PM So webworkz, are you going to entertain us tonight too?
webworkz 10-28-2003, 11:16 PM Not unless another spammer buys a dedicated server from us before I leave for the night. :)
sassSE 10-28-2003, 11:21 PM Damnit, now I have to find the means to entertain myself.
I think I'll start hoping for a spammer to show up before you leave...
