How does $2,000 sound for a 1u server with dual P3 1Ghz, 1 Gb ECC RAM, 2x20Gb ATA100 HDDs in RAID 0 configuration (striping), dual 10/100 LAN adapters, with CD drive, and floppy drive? All quality components -- case from Enlight (250W power supply, 10x fans, copper heatsinks), latest Fujitsu 7200 RPM HDDs, Micron ECC RAM, etc. What are the prices of comparable servers you can buy online these days? I tried Dell, and similar server (HDDs are SCSI, not IDE) costs $3,277 from them...

Stay away from Fujitsu Hard Drives. Go with IBM 75GXP's. Amazing drives!

Actually, latest ATA100 drives from Fujitsu (-AH suffix) are faster and more quiet that IBM. Also I already had one IBM ATA100 drive fail on me (out of two) and the two other drives that are Fujitsu still working.

Does it really matter if its quite? The server would go in a datacenter I would think and no one cares or hears your stuff.

That is extremely true!
