View Full Version : Decision Almost Made!
[inx]Olly 10-26-2003, 09:59 AM Hi guys,
I've been looking at billing software to save me time, and make my web hosting business more efficient.
Thanks to your help, I've narrowed it down now to clientexec, as I believe it's tops in costs and flexibility (we bill for a lot of stuff other than hosting).
I was suggested to look at autopilot, on this thread:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=199913
However, I came to the decision that it wasn't flexible enough to run other services alongside cpanel hosting.
So, my decision is nearly made. All I ask now, is whether anyone else would advise me to change my mind, by suggesting better software.
Thanks.
Reality Hosting 10-26-2003, 10:17 AM So what software have you almost decided on? :D
[inx]Olly 10-26-2003, 10:20 AM Clientexec is winning at the moment!
Incognito 10-26-2003, 10:21 AM Clientexec is an excellent product as are WHMAutopilot and Modernbill. Seems like you did what so many overlook and that is match to your needs.
Yes, WHMAP is designed only to integrate with WHM/CPanel. You can obviously use it for other control panels. It is just that you lose the automation functionality.
[inx]Olly 10-26-2003, 10:23 AM I have to confess I haven't really looked closely at Modernbill. Would anyone recommend it?
Senad 10-26-2003, 10:43 AM I have used PHPManager & Modernbill.
PHPManager/NeoManager - The new version looks promising. Unstable company (been flip floped back and forth a lot). I am waiting for the current version to test before I make my final switch back to modernbill. If nothing comes by the end of this month, Modernbill here i come :).
Modernbill - Short staffed, support can be slow, GREAT FEATURES, Probably cannot go wrong with Modernbill. I myself will go back to modernbill even though support is not the best. Their product does everything anybody needs IMHO. I stopped using ModernBill in order to try a few other products which were awful . Nothing can beat ModernBill.

ModernBill (MB) is due to release v4.1 tomorrow with lots of new features. They are currently on build 52 of the beta. You may want to take a look at that before you make your final decision. It looks like they will have a demo on their site (www.modernbill.com) of the newest version very soon. Do a search here on WHT. It looks like feedback here is mostly positive with the only complaint being that it has so many features which makes setup a little difficult. They are supposed to have a new installation script though that makes setup much easier. I haven't used it yet but plan to when V4.1 is available. (V4.1 is compatible with DirectAdmin, the control panel I am using.) I just paid for the monthly license ($14.95) because the new release was imminent and I wanted to be able to look at their forums (their forum is only available to MB users). Response to questions and problems there seems to be fairly quick from both MB admin and MB users.
I have read good things here too about ClientExec. You probably couldn't go wrong with either one. It just depends on which one suits you best (with what other programs you are using, what features you want, support, cost, etc).
Good luck!:D
Senad 10-26-2003, 11:04 AM Is modernbill adding any features to the "reoccuring payment" issue? I heard that they were but that's all I have heard
[inx]Olly 10-26-2003, 11:09 AM One thing I do wonder is whether modernbill tallies how much you are making per month like autopilot?
[inx]Olly 10-26-2003, 11:14 AM Modernbill is winning now!

Excellent question - I don't know. I did a quick search on their forum but didn't see the answer. I will post that question there and mention this thread.

[inx]Olly 10-26-2003, 11:25 AM The "tally" bit is very very important to me. It would be a big plus if it has got it, as I think we all like to know what we are making (or not :D)
Esr Tek 10-26-2003, 11:51 AM The new MB has alot more reporting functions.
Yes I believe it will have that feature.
There is a hack out (I use now) that gives you the monthly reocurring totals, that is supposed to be added into new build.
[inx]Olly 10-26-2003, 11:58 AM And you say this is out tomorrow? :)
In total we've got between 150-200 clients. I'm wondering whether it's best to but a license upfront or lease one on a monthly basis.

Yes, they are cleaning up the last few little things this weekend and as long as nothing big shows up by Monday, MB says they "will have a soft launch with an RC (release candidate) ready sometime that day (10/27) and our press release will be going out later that week."
I look forward to it.
As far as buying or leasing, check out the options on their website at http://www.modernbill.com/ and click on ORDER.
Hope that helps.

My philosophy is always to buy if possible. Leasing just throws your money away :D
ericabiz 10-26-2003, 04:29 PM I'd second the buy option. It's really not that expensive.
Owned License 250: $179.95 one-time
Leased License Unlimited for one year: $299.40
It's obvious that you should choose the owned license if you plan to use Modernbill for 6 months or more.
By the way, I asked Modernbill support a while ago about uprgading, and you can upgrade for the difference between the packages. Start out with the 250-client license; when you get more than 250 clients, you can upgrade to the 500-client license for $100.
This flexibility made Modernbill a no-brainer for us. We'll have to switch our merchant account to a new provider to take full advantage of it, but I'm finding that merchant accounts have better rates than what we have now, so I don't really mind.
Even though Modernbill setup is daunting (I am not looking forward to the task of moving all our clients from our custom system to Modernbill), once it's set up, it should be a breeze to bill our customers. I am looking forward to the new version that will show us our total monthly income, as well. :)
[inx]Olly 10-26-2003, 04:33 PM OK guys. We get perhaps on average 2 orders a day. Billing, invoicing is a drag. How much time do you reckon ModernBill will save us?
efarmer 10-26-2003, 05:45 PM IMHO if you have a merchant account and do not need complicated tax system, ModernBill is The Solution Period.
Arkansas 10-27-2003, 06:27 PM Here are some replies I got at the MB forum. There are from members, not admin.

You don't need recurring billing with merchant gateway.
Modernbill will simply automatically charge the CC each month (or billing period).
AND
Paypal for example has recurring billing, so answer to your question is yes.

As for the Does MB Tally question, yes. Lots of reports, and the system do it.
Hope that helps.
