View Full Version : Warning about latest Cobalt Apache update
avara 09-02-2001, 03:33 AM It completely messed up my system. Talking to Rackshack, they had to do a load of restores because of it. Even after running the fix posted by Rackshack, I'm still having problems such as Webalizer and a lot of other things not working. Furthermore, after running the fix posted by Rackshack, I now notice that a lot of random files have been fubared/corrupted. In some cases, entire folders have been transformed into empty invisible files, which can only be deleted by logging in as root and typing rm foldername.
Chicken 09-02-2001, 11:42 AM Sorry for your troubles but thankx for taking the time to warn others :(
eva2000 09-02-2001, 12:46 PM check the rackshack.net forums theres more stories like this i believe.. i'm not patching mine until this gets fixed for a while :D
Hi
I have updated my new raq with the cobalt apache patch.... no problems there (I was worried after reading all the horror stories before I installed the patch).
I patched everything from the official download page first before started with patches from the pkg.nl page.
Installed PHP 4.06 and MySQL following eva2000's instructions.
madsere 09-02-2001, 03:10 PM Where did you find the Apache update? It's not posted on the pkg.nl.cobalt.com website ...

madsere 09-03-2001, 07:04 AM Wow, a bunch of software updates? Thanks man!
I searched cobalt.com but only found the pkg.nl.cobalt.com page ...
Anyone know why Cobalt have two different download pages with no references to each other?
unabomber 09-03-2001, 07:20 AM madsere,
pkg.nl.cobalt.com is run inofficially by guys who work at cobalt
cobalt.com/support/download is the official patch site of cobalt
iplexx 09-03-2001, 07:35 AM We'd updated Apache and had no problems, everyting's smooth as usual. AFAIK the update only causes (major) problems when you'd updated ChiliASP.

I'd just like to say that I never upgraded the version of Chili!Soft ASP after getting my RaQ almost 6 months ago. So in other words, don't automatically assume you've got an older version of it like I did.
madsere 09-03-2001, 05:17 PM Actually I verified I have ChiliASP 3.5.2L installed on the system and though I was safe.
Not so.
System never came back from the reboot and is still down now 10 hours later!
Aloha
strange
I updated the apache
(the link seems to be gone now ????
so most likely people are having probs
I installed it no probs and have had updated asp to ???
man I am lucky
did have probs rebooting first time took a long time
then went into telent and restarted apache and it worked have not tried to reboot since then though
iplexx 09-04-2001, 02:16 AM Honu, it's still there on the Cobalt RaQ4 updaets page.
http://ftp.cobalt.com/pub/packages/raq4/eng/RaQ4-All-Security-1.0.1-10602.pkg
Avara, we'd checked that we'd had not 3.6 (it's 3.5.2L) before installing
Madsere, It's always a risk to install (major) updates to the RaQ (ie. Kernel)... Could it be that you'd installed the Kernel Update and the RaQ's down because of this update?

Hm, yes I did install other patches. As a good sysadmin I ran all the Sun Cobalt recommended patches (http://www.cobalt.com/support/download/raq4.eng.html) taking good care only to install those applicable to my Raq - such as the Kernel update 1.0.1 - in order to close security holes in order to prevent hackers and other malitious users from exploiting my system for the general benefit of the Internet.
Are you saying that was wrong? That you're damn if you don't (when sbdy hack your system first thing asked is why didn't you install the patches) and you're damn if you do (as in the present case).
This kernel patch is from June so if it is broken it ought to have been found by now (September). Also, the system did not request reboot until the Apache update - and it was only after the reboot the problem appeared.

Or are you saying you only installed the ones that addressed security-related issues?
You should start at the bottom of the page and work your way up, and install everything. You don't need to worry about installing something you already have, because it won't let you (you'll get an "...already installed..." error message).
We have installed the Apache update on one of our servers, and there's been no problems so we're going to try it on the others. I'm hoping that now that they've got Apache updated, the FrontPage 2002 extensions will follow close behind.

I agree with you.... that was also what RackShack told me to do when I got my Raq.
Anybody else have no problems with the new apache update at rackshack? I have installed all the other paches but im to affraid to update to the latest apache. Rackshack even told us to avoid it.

Aloha
I had no prob
but now knowing what I know I would not do it again
if it is working do not bother they will update the patch sooner or later so I would hang till racksahck says its OK
that is my thought (My raq is at rackshack)
WTFHosting 09-04-2001, 11:55 PM I had no problem with the Apache update on my RaQ4i at Cari.net. I suppose I was lucky, as it was a risk. I also noticed that Sun Cobalt has started charging for technical support, $99 an incident. :( They used to do it for free and saved my butt several times.

Hm, I must be honest and admit I might have passed one or two updates that I was not sure was applicable to the 4i or I didn't feel the need to install - for example the Samba patch, since I don't use Samba on the Raq.
I was not aware the paches had to be installed all of them. I have meanwhile seen the little text on the top of the page with the patches, suggesting to install them all in the proper order -- but frankly, if it is that important that the Raq will die if it is not done I think they should make it stand out a little more. Red font, and "should" replaced with "must".
Maybe this is the reason, I cannot say but I one thing is certain: I don't at this point have the guts to retry the joke. It took me 48 hours to get my Raq back online and frankly, the patches are not that important to me. The Raq is patched up to pretty recent standard by the standard installation anyway.
Live and learn!
HostingDirect 09-05-2001, 10:20 AM I installed the patch and everything seemed to be ok (for 2 or 3 days) until I started adding accounts. My Rackshack box has now been down for going on 16 hours and I am being told the following:
==============================
It appears the group file was overwritten with something that the server didn't like, and the passwd file was overwritten with the group file, I replaced them and all services appear to come up now.
==============================
I have no real indication that the patch caused this but it does seem a little strange that I have corrupted files after the patch install.

As far as I can remeber, the Kernel Update requests a reboot; it needs a reboot to install a new kernel, definitly.
I just asked for the Kernel Update because there've been numerous problems with the update, mostly on RaQ3 (don't know if RaQ4 was affected too), and I think it was only the C24 release.... http://list.cobalt.com/cgi-bin/htsearch?config=htdig&restrict=cobalt-users&exclude=.txt&method=and&format=builtin-short&sort=score&words=216c24
I've done the kernel update (C27) on both RaQ3 & RaQ4, no problems, but I didn't have problems with the apache update either...
In conclusion: don't trust cobalt updates; either be brave and risk a dead raq, or wait for others to confirm the update works...
Matthew.A 09-06-2001, 06:32 AM Well I have Chilisoft ASP 3.6 on my RAQ4 and have been nervous about installing the upgrade to the newer level of Apache. I fired off an e-mail the Chilisoft support
==========================================
We do have a patch to correct the compatibility problems with Apache 1.3.20. The download information is included below. Make sure you apply the ChiliSoft patch *after* applying the Apache 1.3.20 upgrade. Reboot your server afterwards.
==========================================
So if you do have problems, might be worth contacting Chilisoft. I'm still not sure if I want to chance it!!!
