hey,
what's the story with network solutions holding onto domain names that have expired?
there is a domain i want. it expired about 4 months ago, but network solutions keep telling me it is already registered.
my question is this: after how long do network solutions release expired domains?
thanks!

I was just gonna post something about this today also. Check out www.greatdomains.com and see if the domain is being sold there. i think that site is owned by NS and it's where they sell their domains that they get whenever a good domain expires and they don't let anybody else register it (well that's what i think). This is what they do to all the domains I was looking in to register including some three character domains that expire every so often. i hate it.
A domain is only suppose to be on-hold for 30-45 days after expire date after that it's suppose to be dropped..

Check out this articles written 2 days ago about expired domains...
http://websearch.about.com/library/searchtips/bltotd010830.htm
....At the beginning of August, they (verisign/Network Solutions) stopped letting expired domains go up for sale. To make a long story short, they've suddenly decided to start releasing them again....
...For a few days at least, there's a veritable flood of expired domain names coming onto the market. Over a period of a week or so, starting today, more than 100,000 expired names will go up for sale. A lot of them are worthless, but there are also plenty of gems to be found. To do well in the landrush, you need to use one of the specialized expired domain search engines...
Another article talkign about the big domain drop goign on right now

I, too, have been waiting for a domain name that has been expired since November 2000.
The registrar, of course, Network Solutions

hopefully these domains will be dropped in the "mother of all drops" this week.

although names will continued to be released, i am under the impression that the "mother of all drops" has already happened on 30 August.
I slept right through it, although I did pick up two domain names that i wanted, mainly because the 15 minute window of opportunity stretched out to a few hours.
in answer to your question
after how long do network solutions release expired domains?
the answer is, as long as they feel like!
and it appears the better the name, the longer they take.
Does it make a difference if the name is trademarked? Can that speed up the process of releasing the expired domain?
