View Full Version : Hosting a 200Gig / Month site

Hi guys

My other company (3dwizards.com) is currently working on a new site that will include LOTS of streaming media for the TV Food Network, we are guessing we will get about 200Gig transfer rates a month, any ideas where I can get a dedicated server for this that won't cost more than a small country's annual budget ? my hosting servers are with Alabanza, but it would be very expensive to host sutch a site there.

Thank for any help

Well, 200 gigs aside, you'll probably also need a relatively powerful server to handle that kind of traffic. On Rackspace.com, which I recommend, expect to pay around $1000 monthly for such a server with Linux on top.

We can give you a very good price for that dedicated server. Contact us if you are interested.

Thank you to all that reply to me (lots of e-mails), we realized that instead of 200Gig a month we are looking at about 5.000 Gig transfer instead (oouch), so other routes are beeing considered intead.

Thanks

Yes, it's pretty funny.....there must be dozens of people around here lurching in the corners, waiting to email people like you, and if they don't post the answer here i'd be suspicious...LOL :)

No, I don't ever email people in forums with my sales pitch, i leave that to you people...

Well Greg, I did asked for prices, so I did expected e-mails, this damm project is just getting too big for me to handle, I told them to just get a OC-3 and build the servers in-house (can you imagine the price on that kind of bandwith ?).. well they do have the money .. we don't ;)

Gee, WHAT a GREAT site to email those UNLIMITED hosts about. Please, please, please, *someone* do it...

I'd pay to see the expression on their face once they read the amount that person needs, heh heh. "But you say unlimited on your site, we need this..." *grins widely*

Carlos, i've been trying to ICQ you :)

We can handle 5000 gb no problem, thats our combined usage on porn clients anyhow lol :).

Although I'd recommend using several servers in a cluster.

Sorry Daniel, I'll try to look at less porn on your clients sites from now on, i didn't realize how much bandwidth i was taking :)

Nonono, look MORE at them

a cluster isnt necessary, pop in 512 MB ram, a p3 800 and SCSI hard drives ...200 gigs would be easy

just my 3.1425 cents :)

i'm going back into hiding

Vinay, read the whole thread, he just reposted saying 5000 gb not 200, so a cluster would be necessary, of course a good dual P3 1ghz and 1gb ram and the best scsi drives avaliable could pull it off, its not advisable for such high traffic, a cluster would keep the sites up more.

5000 , heh, dont blame me, i'm sleepy.. anywayz, in that case, i'll go with 2 gigs of ram on a dual xeon :) .. would cost a little fortune, but loads should stay under 0.5 ... that is, if the site is decent and has half-decent scripting language like php, perl can be a server-killer at times :)

clusters are good, but expensive and unneccessary in many cases .. a single big server is good for a d-server ..

oh, and yes, for the above config, i'd advise to run bsd instead of linux, and hack the kernel + apache to handle more processes before the server gives up ..

5000 gigs of bandwidth on the other hand is a little "ouch" situation .. heh, you'd probably like having a T3 and moving up a tier in the stream :)

Uhm, guys, is it 5.000 gigs or 5,000 gigs? Look closely... Clarification's required.

my best guess is 5,000 since some people do use a . instead of a , and i've never seen people put 3 decimals of 00's ;)

either way, they must have a huge VC for such a project :) .. its projects like these which i like to be on the scripting teams of !

it's 5,000 Gigs

This site will have about 200 clips in both real and media stream a month of 1/2 hour shows, plus real time streaming shows from 5 different locations (still brainstorming on that one) the budget is something like 150-200K a month to start, like I said before, it is big, so I'm giving the hosting part to i-beam, and concentrating on the development of it with a team we put togueder, it's allot of fun to work in something this big (and VERY profitable), but man, if we screw this .. we are done in this industry.

*swoon*

That's a couple of very nice numbers *grin* Good luck with it. I suppose first chance you get you'll be looking at gold plated mouse catalogs :)

As Felix said it's a long way to fall if it goes pear-shaped *thinks of boo.com* but it's also the sort of deal that sets you up as a force to be reackoned with. I'm sure everyone else here is wishing you the best as well. Keep us informed as things progress, as I for one love to see someone succeed. Those long hours seem easier when there's light at the end of the tunnel - even if I'm only looking at someone else's at the time.

I'd like to also offer my best wishes too Carlos. My usual advice is : the Net may move quickly, but always, always consolidate before moving on. Otherwise it will be yet another case of a dot com expanding its balloons too quickly... With a very familiar result.

Yups, Best of Luck. I wish I was the guy you were purchasing the bandwidth from at 10$/gb :) hehehe.. :) Well have fun, and dun think of the wrongs, just think of the rights!! :)

Kunal ... FYI we will be getting the bandwith at $0.03 before 300Gig and 0.02 After 300Gig.

How are they charging you for bandwidth, the ol' 95% percentile peak that we all love so much, or by actual throughput used?

Greg

I'll be honest with you, I don't know, we will have a meeting tomorow in NY (damm I hate to fly) where all those questions will be adressed.

Greg

I love flying....just take a game or something to read and take your mind of flying....and chew gum so your ears won't pop :)

And a few glasses of booze won't hurt either :)

Yup, I highly recommend 'Quest for Camelot' on the Nintendo Gameboy Color. It kept me going from Sydney to San Francisco a while back. :) RPG's are great as they are slow moving, and the Gameboy allows you to play one-handed so your Bourbon and Coke doesn't get too warm if you forget it sitting on your tray.

... ahh priorities.

I would suggest trying to either get your own connections or find a local host for the server site. If you are really pumping that much material, it may be best to have at least two servers with load balancing between them. You would probably want to have physical access to the server(s) at any time, so you may want to see what companies are located in your area.

Best regards,
