View Full Version : One more 1&1 question..what is: "Please check the FTP server's name!"

I got WS_FTP LE set up to do it's thing and I finally figured out how to set up the FTP system in 1&1's site.

As you may know I'm using 1&1's Website Creator and I saved my new website template and clicked publish, but I keep getting this message: Please check the FTP server's name!

What is the FTP servers name? Where do I find it?

1&1 has the user name, password, and directory fields already populated (it won't let me change them) but I CAN change the FTP server name field..but I don't know what to put in there.

Anyone using this software know what to do?

I'm so darn close to finally having a site up and running, but this one thing is holding me up.

Thanks for all your help!
Alfer

I would assume either your site name (if its already propagated) or the ip of your server... however, I have no clue how 1&1 has their stuff set up..

That really seems like 1&1 would be in the best position to answer that. Normally the "Host" name is the domain name (or IP) but they may have their own system in place which would make it difficult for anyone to answer unless they also had an account there.

Don't they provide any support?

From what I hear.. I guess not. But it's free, so how much support should one really expect?

Boy you guys are quick around here!

Yes they offer "support" but it's email only, and I hear it's hit and miss so I'm hoping there's a small group of folks here who may have first hand knowledge of what I'm looking for.

As for your suggestions...I did use my domain name "theenormodome.com" but it still didn't work. Maybe it takes several hours or a day or two for everything to settle in. I set up my FTP account within the 1&1 system around 6pm CST.

Maybe I'll wait it out and try tomorrow.

Thanks again

Alfer

Hi Alfer, it will take any where from 24-72 hours for your domain to propagate to your new 1&1 account. Until then, http, ftp, pop3, etc will not work.

Just to clarify, those above services will not work with your domain name.. until the propagation is over.

Alfer,

1&1 issues their own internal domain for you until your real name hits all servers. You can use that to FTP. It's usually something like: s#.onlinehome.us, where the pound-sign is an eight-digit number. I 've used that "domain name" to do FTP.

Yeah I see I have that domain of theirs, but if I create my template, create the Forum for it, etc. and all the other things I want and FTP to "their" domain instead of mine, how does all the work I've done end up back with MY domain?

p.s. what exactly is the "directory" it asked me for? Current;y I chose default which just show a "/" in the FTP directory etc. Do I need to create a folder on my PC for my new site material, or just leave it alone?

Thanks

UPDATE!

For the he** of it I followed your advice and used 1and1's domain to FTP, and like magic, it uploaded everything AND it all ended up still using MY domain.

See the start of what I hope is a better site than the one I did before with my WebEasy software.

Please don't laugh when you see it..it's only at the very beginning stages.

Thanks!

"Their" domain points to the same directory structures as your domain will.

Hmmm.... sorry, I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but the "/" in the target directory indicates the "root" or "home" directory of your Web site. What source directories you create, or how you organize them on your PC is up to you. (Again sorry, but I'm not clear on your second question.)

This points out one of the disadvantages of 1&1's free accounts. Spotty support, and they lack a user's forum.

I'm new to 1&1 as well. I just setup my site there earlier today, but haven't changed the nameservers yet.

I emailed a question to them earlier today and am still waiting for a response. I just want to purchase more bandwidth and asked them how to do that. I suspect I have to give them my credit card # under the user info section and they'll bill me after I've exceeded the 5GB quota, but I'd like to hear that from them without having the site shut-down when it exceeds 5GB's.

Glad it worked. For a bit of background I would suspect their servers work in the same way as something such as CPanel, where your username is 'more important' than the domain name. Once you log into the server through any domain name, the server will see your username and point you to the right directory (where your website is), as long as you provide the correct password along with it.

So now this board has become a 1&1 support place?

So the description of this particular forum ("Web Hosting")doesn't apply now?
