I would not base your decision solely on that thread. There have been quite a few discussions about Rackshack, and I would reccomend searching the boards.

Aloha

well yes I have had experience
bad and good
the bad was with dns issues how to resolve it do your own dns
if I had done my own from the start would not have had problems
why do your own dns
control
looks better to end user
more control
you can do it naytime of day or night

the good far outways the bad
Price can not beat it
there network very good very fast and overall as stable as the next big guys

support has been sketchy at times and good at times
but they are making huge strides to get better
they are getting better not worse which is hard to say for quite a few companies.
the headsurfer is on the board now and they hired a SUN Coblat trainer or something like that to come in and train there staff
getting a better location facility to offer quicker on hands service if needed (this should be very rare)
offering many great more services.
so yes go for it if you know the limits of a raq it is not a dual pIII with 2 gigs of memory
but it is also not the price so
let us know what you want to do with it and sure WHT can help ya out

hey Honu, do you or someone you know (or anyone reading this) know of any large message boards hosted on that Rackshack plan? It's a very tempting offer, but I'm not sure how a large vBulletin would perform on their servers.

Aloha
I am not sure
I do not have that much running on my raq as most of my clients are on another server
going to get all going on one server soon though using the raq to play with and going to be planning on using it to serve up panoramic photos that will be mostly bandwith and not intensive on the raq.

sorry could not tell ya more ;)

Aloha

I have a RAQ 4i 256 Mb and is hosting banner exchanges on it which use much of perl and MySQL.

So far I get about 800 000 hits a day half of which are requests that require running the script.

So within last weeks I get hours when the server is highly loaded.
One more thing I also had to optimize my RAQ for performance.

- disable GD module
- make apache logs to have the lowes detalisation
- disable RAQ stats
- disable MySQl log
- disable ASP
- disable PHP

At the above condition I was able to fit 256 MB memory.
My daily log MySQL database is 120 MB.

So for you I would recommend to upgrade to 512 Gb of memory, disable all that unnneccesary things besides PHP as PHP will add weight to apache processes.

I think the main criteria for the forum is how much contemporary forum visitors you'll be able to serve with a RAQ.

So, I guess if you have forum database which is around 200 Mb you'll be able to serve about 80 contemporary visitors who logged to the forum.

I think RAQ 4 from rackshack is a good deal when you need your first dedicated server, but it still cheap AMD 450 configured for hosting many small sites and requires some performance tuning.

On Monday I hope to get a PIII 800 from multipleimage.com

Sorry, English is not my native language. I used beside instead of except here

.disable all that unnneccesary things besides PHP as PHP will add weight to apache processes.

What I actually meant is to disavble all unnecessary things except PHP like Webalizer, ASP, GD, extensive logging to get more resources for your vBulleting

go with racks only if you are on tough budget and noice user or need lots of bandwidth are dirt price.

i don't trust cobalt racks ( i am not saying rackshake) becuase of there processing capabilities. also consider backup solutions which i think rackshake does not provide at this moment of time.

Also i have heared lots of scarry stories about cobalt hacks.

rackshake is good but new in hosting business and i have heared there support is only capable of swithching rack on and off. (at least there TOS sounds like that). ;) but i don't blame them for this because $99 you can not and should not expact any thing more.

the most thing i like about rackshake is 300GB for $99 you will never get such offer because i know there network is very good and honest.

I tried hosting one of my friends forums (http://www.wannabebigforums.com) on one of their RaQ4i's with 256MBs of RAM, and, to say the least, it didn't go well at all. It crashed the server constantly, and forced me to move the site to a real linux server.

Hope that helps...

I am running a Vbulletin site with avg 15-30 users on all the time, 50,000+ Posts and have no problem with rackshack. its a great deal besides the no IRC server part :(

thanks for the story. would you mind telling me which host you finally did go with, and whether or not you're satisfied with them?

will5404, 15-30 users at once and 50k posts is practically nothing. Couldn't you run that on a shared host and pay even less than rackshack?

People keep moaning about the support not being always being quick enough, you only pay $99 per month for the lease of a server AND 300 GB bandwidth.

Maybe they should offer a service where you can pay a little more but get a higher level of support?

I am considering them for a dedicated server in the future, I have contacted support via email and ok the reply was 2days in coming but my questions were answered. Plus I have used their live chat where the staff have always been helpful and efficient.

Show me a better deal for $99 per month?
