We've had recommendations for a new machine, and I see some people still have the breathtaking speed of some early P2's :), but what specification is your machine?

Mine is as follows:
1 Ghz Athlon (put to shame by new 2Ghz P4's - Intel will be making some money out of me very shortly I believe ;) )
512Mb RAM (PC100)
1 x 30 Gb HDD, 7200 IDE
1 x 15 Gb HDD, 7200 IDE
1 x 17.4Gb HDD, 5400 IDE
SCSI CDRW (yamaha 4x4x16)
12 x Creative DVD
52 x LG CDROM
32Mb Geforce 2
Creative 128 Sblaster (ouch)
NEC 19" flatscreen monitor
MS Natural Kb / Logitech IR mouse

So what's your system?

Recently there was a thread on WHT like this...
My only comment is: read some reviews of the P4 and you will not change your mainboard/processor :)

I'm looking to add a new machine to my "collection", I have a general right now, one that is too slow imo for much (P3 550Mhz, lol), plus my gaming / workstation (combined as one). I'd like another machine which I can use solely for a workstation (Win2K, it'll be on pretty much 24/7), and this means I can dedicated my current machine just for gaming.

For my new workstation, I was debating having a dual Athlon 1.2ghz, or a single P4 2ghz - I have never used a dual processor AMD based system, or a P4 for that matter, so am a little unsure of which route to take - which would you advise me to use, bearing in mind it will be on for the majority of the time?

TIA
Matt

Well...

2 1.4GHz Athlons are $250 (total), and 1 2GHz P4 is $500 (1.8GHz is $249). Seeing how the 1.4 Athlon is faster than the 2.0 P4, at one-half the price, I think you should get the Athlons.

Unless you want to make the Internet go faster and send more emails per second, just like the P4 commercials tell you, I would get the Athlon.

My current machine is:
P3 500 MHz
512MB SDRAM
19" and 17" monitors
ATI Radeon 32MB DDR and Voodoo3 2000
2x25GB 7200RPM IDE HDs
Win2k

My laptop is:
P3 650MHz
196MB SDRAM
14.1" TFT LCD
10GB HD
Debian Linux

My router+server is:
Duron 650MHz
256MB SDRAM
30GB 7200RPM HD
OpenBSD 2.8

My development server is:
Athlon 600MHz
128MB SDRAM
15GB HD
FreeBSD 4.2

My "uptime" server is:
66MHz 486
32MB RAM

As you can see I don't really need powerful processors. I mainly just ssh to my servers and do stuff there. I don't quite need a new desktop computer yet, because I still get a respectable 40-50FPS in CS and 60-70FPS in Q3A.
