Does anyone know if I am permitted to format my RS server before I cancel it, or will they charge me to re-load everything?

They will charge you the cost of a restore... if you want to restore it before you cancel it.

Think he means that he wants to reformat the server himself and then cancel it. If so, that is no problem because they wipe and reinstall anyway before reselling it

Basically, I want to know if I can format the server, leave it as is after the format and give it back to them without any restore charges? Or do I have to format, restore the control panel, and then cancel to avoid the fees?

As a security precaution I always format a server before I give it up.. Well its not really format.. Just dd :D

If want to wipe yoru data (or the entire server) just before cancelling, there is no problem as that server will be restored/configured and then resold.

There is no reason, in my opinion, to pay us to do what we already will be doing.

It is a good idea, in my opinion, to completely remove your data before cancelling. That's just my opinion.

Many servers store personal information such as addresses, phone numbers, and credit card numbers. I certainly would want that information hidden before returning a server.

I have nothing to hide, but was not sure of EV1's practices after cancellation. This is for my own peace of mind so that I know that the next person that gets my server will not have access to ANY of my files, configurations, etc.

Headsurfer - Just got off the chat with Matthew H. - he was most helpful, as was your post here. I just wasn't sure, and I like to play by the rules (usually :D).

Please tell me you are joking?!? Chances are the server would or could have anything ranging from comercial scripts to user information and web sites. Now, can you honestly tell me that you would leave that sort of data on your server if you were, lets say moving to a new host? You would leave that sort of data, the data that your clients count on you to keep confidential and out of other peoples hands to the host or IF ( we know rackshack reformats / reinstalls ) they hadn't reinstalled the OS to the next person to take on the machine?

You could just do a rm -rf /home before you give it back, or will they charge you to reinstall the OS for the next person?
