View Full Version : YouHo! copy or parody? (warning : contains some porn on 3rd party site)

Hi,
I had a look at http://www.youho.com and am asking myself if this site layout is stolen from yahoo! or if there are provisions about "parody" which allow such remake of famous websites.

Any opinions?

<<Admin edit : please be aware the above link goes to a 3rd party site consisting of adult material (porn). After some discussion, the mods have decided to place it back in as the rest of the thread contains standard discussion.>>

Umm... I know it looks like Yahoo! That wasn't my question. I asked if this goes ok under "parody" or not.

I know, this is an advanced question, not for AnIdiot :D

Does your girlfriend/wife know that you're surfing on YouHo...*ahem* WebHostingTalk? :D Yeah, it looks like Yahoo ...but there are hundreds of similar sites out there.

Anyway... my opinion is that it's parody. I think this guy must have spent very much time to make this site, he didn't take the yahoo design to safe on development time but rather because it's fun to make an adult search engine which comes with a Yahoo look.

There used to be http://www.yahoosuck.com/ that listed all the sites that got declined at Yahoo :D But i can't reach their site now, maybe its gone? :(

Looks like it's gone :(

Thanks BC. The link is given to discuss the site layout and if someone clicks that link to see a yahoo lookalike website, she finds just that and will be happy, even if she doesn't like the topic of YouHo!; she wasn't told anything about what topic to expect and actually, it doesn't matter when talking site layout.

I actually don't understand what purpose the adult content warning should serve. This YouHo! site doesn't show anything offending does it? On the other hand it obviously is about x rated stuff and the one who just wanted to see the site layout, well she will simply look at it and not check out all the links :)

Anyway, a very sensible decision to keep it in, BC.

well nowadays, theres SO MANY websites out there, thats its VERY hard to say that a design is copied, or that a name is copied.

I agree that YouHo! sounds somewhat 'borrowed' from yahoo.
But in no way should that be a trademark infringement.

My 2Cents

Sure Trevor.

I was more thinking about the copyright part. I think YouHo could hardly deny that he has made a work derived from the Yahoo website. Normally use of a derivative work requires consent of the author of the original work. The only possible way to use it without original author's consent is to claim that it's a parody I think.

I think YouHO is extremely well done. I wish it was mine :D

you're right.

its hard to tell if a design is stolen
Yahoo has a very basic design, that MANY sites have 'borrowed'.

I once heard that every search engine site design was inspired by Yahoo.
Could be true?
Who knows.

Slight correction, as their ad banner network regularly rotates to show porn photos etc. for sites, so technically it *does* show porn. (IMHO of course..)

As a matter of fact, following up on the prior discussion on this topic, the moderators have decided to implement a written policy on adult/porn links..... More on this shortly as this needs some thought.

Now, back on topic.......

Just curious, if yahoo! also wants this domain, between the yahoowfuji and YouHo, who has a better chance to keep the domain?

Why? This thread isn't about the content ob YouHo, but simply about the layout. Why shouldn't I discuss a site layout related IP question, just because the site has some type of content?

Of course one might say it's not about hosting and hence off topic, but then this is the Lounge forum,...

The only thing that makes a "big issue" out of this little link is that BC modified the subject line to let everyone know "Wooohooo there's some real hot porn here !!!!!". ;) Well, BC is kinda right there are ad banners on that site, so the warning statement inside my post is probably justified. But raising it to subject level is making a big story about nothing, somehow? And it turns the thread topic into something xxx related, somehow, while it wasn't intended to be.

Just my 2cts.

Rather than to discuss this subject here in the "General Web Hosting" forum; I will withhold further comment until someone addresses it in the "Lounge" or somewhere more appropriate.

Oops, I really thought I had posted to the Lounge, could the thread be moved there?

Or just delete the thread, I don't care.
