What exactly are they? I've done a few searches around the web, but I'm still uncertain of the purpose/benefits of having "DNS Wildcards".

I've seen a couple of hosts saying they offer this.

DNS wildcards basically means *.yourdomain.com will point to www.yourdomain.com automatically. It's easy to setup subdomains this way if your Control Panel doesn't support it.
