Well... I was wondering.. If my site getmonked.net comes under a DOS attack which lasts say 12hrs. And the bandwidth consumption shooots upto say 200gb from the allowed 20gb. Do I have to pay for all of it?? Isnt it an security problem on the NOC side? or how does it work???
It depends on who is responsible for the server security (of your site). If your site is a virtual host, then the NOC running the servers and sites is responsible for protecting you to the best of their abilities.
However, since DOS attacks are nearly impossible to stop (unless you firewall nearly every port off and do packet filtering) it's very hard to blame the NOC in this case. I suggest you e-mail the tech support team behind the NOC and ask what will happen regarding the spiked bandwidth. I think they will usually absorb the costs (by themselves)... But I could be wrong.
I believe this happened to a DI customer and they were billed for it. The only way I know is because they made his comment into a faq.
Generally you will be billed for the bandwidth, or other reasources used.
