My primary job is administering Windows servers, so I can't stray too far :)

At least at home I have a choice....

Edit: no sitting there for a few hours, I already made the switch and am running RH9 as I speak...er type as the case may be.

Man, and judging from the thread title, I thought you got married. I was coming to give you grief for visiting WHT on your wedding night :D

redhat=evil... debian=good, if you need a desktop replacement, i guess redhat is decent. Good luck

I have a redhat 9 machine at home.

Crashes more than my windows machine and I just don't get on with it as a desktop.... server great, desktop... it's not good enough yet IMHO.

I have been using redhat for about two years at home, and it crashed once in all that time. Mozilla and a couple of other apps have crashed from time to time, but only once (that I can recall) have I had to reboot.

Any reason you didn't go with a duel boot?

As they say.. when you learn to swim, the best way to learn is to just throw you in the deep end. You will learn :D

Not really...

My wife's pc is running XP still, I just don't see a point in taking up system resources (ie disk space) to dual boot when I don't see any advantages.

I say crashes more than XP basically because I can't actually remember the last time my XP machine crashed.

However I have only had my redhat machine set up for a month and a bit (was using SuSE before) and I've had an unrecoverable crash twice in that time i.e. reboot

OK it's not crashing 'all the time' but still more than my xp or mac osx

Installing Linux (esp later versions) on the first try is so easy a 5 year old should be able to do it hopping on one foot.

With the installation managers that have been developed lately, it's (literally) child's play, insert disk 2, insert disk 3, etc.

Getting sound configured with redhat/any unix product, I remember the day when THAT used to be a big ol problem. Hell, I remember the day when configuring video was a problem, but now, it's as easy as just doing it. Granted, you still want to use OSS drivers (http://www.opensound.com/) for full channel support (playing two sounds at once), rather than the default redhat/slackware/whatever drivers, and those drivers cost a li'l more, but it's well worth it.

I agree. When using Redhat as a desktop OS, it (Xfree86) definitely crashes more than XP. Mostly from buggy apps.
