View Full Version : Entire SAGO/United Colo network in spews.
M0NkEY 10-14-2003, 08:18 PM all 8000 IPs
I've also heard they forward spam complaints to users for listwashing.
Just wanted to throw that out there for anyone who does a search on them.
EDIT: Blah, could a mod move this to the dedicated server forum. I posted in the wrong forum.
Obviously this is a bad thing, but SPEWS is supposed to be _way_ overzealous in removing people. I believe places like RackShack et al that are _really_ good with spam complaints get decent-sized blocks blacklisted often, but I suspect they can get out somewhat because they're massive, and can say "We pulled the box on them once we got a complaint."
I really don't see why so many people use SPEWS. SpamAssassin checks a bunch of blacklists for me, but SPEWS isn't one of them. They're way overzealous, and their "collateral damage" policy is often taken too far. If an ISP knowingly accomodates spammers, they should eventually be blacklisted. But it seems to be that SPEWS lists anyone if more than a couple messages get sent, despite the fact that it was just a couple out of thousands of servers.
Tazzman 10-14-2003, 09:12 PM If I read inbetween the lines on the spews news page article about Sago, it goes a little like 'They had one or 2 spammers on their network they didn't get rid of, so we just went and blacklisted the entire company'.
That might just be me, though.

It is just you. You should have said "If I filter through my misconceptions, and lack of historical perspective" rather than "read between the lines".
From the spews news page:
[20/Apr/02] Sago Networks listing removed
Sago Networks had been providing services to one of the worst spammers and spammer hosts on the Internet (Power Email Systems, Beverly Hills Hosting, John Galt Networks). Their initial responses to the abuse were that as long as the spammers abused other people's systems, they would not terminate. They then stated they had contractual reasons for allowing the abuse to continue. It seems that policy has been changed. SPEWS hopes this change is permanent.
There it is. Google on the names mentioned to see why the listing was as extensive as it was.

Tazzman 10-14-2003, 09:37 PM I understand that, but is it truly necessary to add the entire network over 4 spammers. Also, I didn't see it mentioned those were still actually on Sago.
Anyway, I have no reason to defend Sagonet and probably never will. I have a destinct love for GlobalCompass these days ;)
I did look up the IP for sagonet.com and that didn't show up as listed. Any idea of the IP's that are listed, so I can have a little read?

Yes, in this case it is.
Sagonet/UnitedColo not only allowed the spamming it also trying to hide/protect these dirtbags by continually changing their IPs.
Many view SPEWS as extremist because they list entire blocks instead of just the IPs being used for spamming. However, I feel that they were more than justified in this case.
Sago/UCG was also listed in Monkeys.com's "Top 40 Proxy-Hijacker-Friendly Nets".
a.harris 10-15-2003, 04:29 AM Bottom line is, by SPEWS doing such an extremem thing as adding the whole range; Sago actually dealt with it.

Shannara 10-15-2003, 02:11 PM Extreme is needed in this day and age to get the point across. To many "lazy" anti spam sites only block small blocks of IPs at a time, and still "promote" spam and hackers and the like. Heck, look at RoadRunner as an example. they PROMOTE (as in, flat out refusing to discontinue service of hackers and spammers, according to their fake abuse department) such activities. In such a case, the whole ISP should be blocked until they decide to do their job....
*shrugs*
Blocking small blocks of IPs are worthless until the ISPs actually do their job.
Thank god someone is standing up to these spammers, this really is a lowly bunch.
Also - I've also heard they forward spam complaints to users for listwashing.
Huh? Spews is nothing more than a list that other software checks, but way to get hysterical and show how little credibility you have.

Chet Um... the complaint forwarding has nothing to do with spews. You have no IDEA how much credability I have and you obviously don't know what listwashing is.
You should have stopped typing at "huh?".
