View Full Version : Choosing a domain

Chicken

I want to register another domain but can't decide which one to pick. Almost considering putting some slips of paper in a bag. How to pick the "winner" ???

My current method (which isn't getting me too far) is to just consider the ones I really want (leave out the many ones that are merely decent). These are all fun domains (not for biz and somewhat odd). I also am considering the length, as one is quite shorter than the rest at 6 characters, but the others sound a bit better (two words together). Lastly, which one is most likely to be taken in the near future. We all knows what happens when you wait.

Any ideas?

Have you tried messing around at:

http://www.nameboy.com/

Sometimes just goofing around over there helps me clarify domain names...

If nothing else, it's a great time waster! LOL! ;)

actually I recommend Nameboy as well. Sometimes that script has a flash of inspiration and gives you a winner. Nifty looking site too :)

Well, I don't have a problem coming up with them (and actually have a long list of ones I want). Nameboy would just give me more choices, heh.

Of course (inbetween typing this) I had to check it out, and yes, it added another STRONG contender. Well, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Blah :)

Well i would say get them all but not at once. just get them when you are ready for them. Just kinda create them and link them together for a close knit community. Well Chicken i just got my nqame and well i got to register it.

Note: this is copied from a post I made at Sitepoint, but this WHT seems to be better traveled...

Ok, another question- adding "the" to a domain. A bit ago, I resisted registering thedomainbrain.com since domainbrain.com was taken and all that happened was that someone else took it. Now, whether or not the owner of thedomainbrain is fighting legal battles and their life has been reduced to hiding out from "the man", I don't know. Again, I am faced with the same problem.

This one however could at least be used for something different (hence possible legal battles may be lessened). Ohhh heck.

Chicken, we have this brilliant young team of copywriters who work with us. They all hold a Masters degree in English and are extemely creative. If you wish, I could have them look up your final list of choices and suggest other good alternatives for you.

We also have this computer wiz who works with us and who had been developing some sort of software in his leisure time which searches names on more than 10 levels. The software is almost ready and I was extremely impressed with it when he gave me a demonstration. I gave him a few names we were intending to suggest to our clients, and was extremely surprised at the number of attractive options his software dished out... instantly!!! Simply amazing!!!

I believe he has integrated a thesauras into the software which allows him to do this. He has also made it possible to do a mass number of searches for the availability of domain names when this is done. So the printout we got were all names that were actually available!!!

I am still scratching my head as to how brilliant and innovative some young people can be. He's only 22 years old.

So let me know if you wish to run your final list in this software... you could be surprised... I was more than surprised... I was zapped!!!

You might be surprised to learn how old some of us are..... :D

Learner

BC :D Exactly how old are you, pal?

!!! LOL !!!

I may not know much about software, but I have visited sites like NameBoy which just provide you a fraction in options of what this chap seems to be working on.

On our suggestion, he has included newer options (about 10 levels so far) which really enchances the processing power of his code.

For example, Chicken was having a problem deciding on a good name. Most of us aren't even fortunate enough to come across available names. It is very frustrating that they have all gone.

What is so special about this guy is that his code has been programmed to include new suffixes like:

*the-*
*-s*
*-es*
*-d*
*-ed*
*-y*
*-ly*
*-ing*
*-en*
etc.

Furthermore, he told me he accesses the domain data which his software matches directly from NetSol... their zone files or something... I can't remember exactly what I was told, but it seems that this sort of data is available to the public. So the output info generated is extremely accurate.

That's not all, it checks domain names not only for the top three gTLDs, but for many more simultaneously... including the ccTLD for my country.

What I like best about his code is that it breaks up a word at the vowels, then is programmed to replace the vowels with a single or a pair of consonants... and then proceeds to do the search. For example, the word "domain" will first be broken up into "dom", "doemain", "domayn", etc. Or the word "super" into "sooper".

I just told him a few days ago that one major plus point about this feature is that you can get around trademark issues easily, because very few of such odd spellings have been trademarked yet... plus they are unique and very easy to remember.

I used to think that most of the good .coms are gone... but I have begun to realize that plenty good ones are still available... there is hope on the horizon still. It all depends on the power of one's searching. Yup, the proper english spellings are all unavailable, no doubt about that!!! Especially single words!!! But when played around like this, it opens a whole new world of single-word .coms available for the taking.

You want to give this a try and get zapped just like I was??!!!! Email me a keyword for a domain name you like and I will send you the output. Try the same feaure found so commonly on some sites... compare... and let me know your opinion then.

And along with your opinion, you mustn't forget to disclose to me how old you are :D *cough*

!!! LOL !!!

I don't think that below 18 is surprising at all, actually, I would be more surprised if there wasn't andyone here under 18! Hmm.. 27 is old? Guess I must be in a nursing home then since I'm 35 :D

*hands Chuck a walking stick*

That's ok old man... you just sit back there and relax - wouldn't want you to go and have a stroke on us. *grin* Happy to see I'm not as old as I thought I was though. Seems these lil whipper-snappers are everywhere these days! It'd be ok if they weren't good, but some of them are damn brilliant!

Makes you wonder if they even remember 14.4 modems and 100mhz desktops being kick-ass. :) And don't even get me started on Commodore 64! Remember Elite? Greatest game ever made!!

I remember when 14.4 modems came out, it was great! Sure beat the 300 baud I started with :) The ole' C-64 was far superior to the MC-10 I had as well! I liked it so much I even replaced my datasette with a floppy drive LOL

Elite was a great game!!! Too bad I've never gotten it for the PC, I've only had it for the Amiga and C-64. Never did actually beat it, got pretty good at manual docking though!

hmm, don't need the cane, thanks. Already got one! :(

C64, Mission Impossible . I wore that game out. Rember how it would give you written clues along the bottom and you would have to type in sentences to play the game? Ahh the memories. 28 Here

Yeah, I think I wrote some of those "interactive" games like that...

"You come to a door, do you want to go in?"

"You come to a wall. Do you want to go left or right?"

Manual docking? *Fhaaa!* Docking computer and 'Fur Elise' was the way to go *lol* Never beat it either however - Retired with a rating of 'Deadly'. By the way there's a few versions out now playable on PC via emulators. In fact one version uses the exact code from the C64 disk. Takes some searching but I found it a few months ago *lol*. Sadly I'd forgotten most of the keys and there's no manual. Funnily enough the game and emulator runs about 3 meg or so total, which given the original system it ran on was under 64k, there's a lot of programming to slow things down enough to make it playable now *grin*

The rumor still persists of a new version in the works one day, same playability, but 3D accelerated etc. *lives in hope*. Privateer II comes close so far :)

Oh I love those domain names by the way. Happy to see people aren't worried about getting a domain name that doesn't have some sort of business edge to it these days. :)

Actually, I do remember the good old days... My original computer was an Apple IIe with monochromatic green and black screen.... Played 'Olympics' on it and beat the crap out of my thick wobbly joystick... Then my Dad attached the Apple to a TV and the colors changed to blue and orange! :)

Then I upgraded to a 286, and drew stupid pictures on it before finally getting up to a 486 in '94 (when 100 mHz was making its way into the market, so yes, definitely remember it). Now I'm running an AMD K6-2 350, still using the original 286 case and what not. Yee-ouch.

It may not surprise Learner to know that I'm 19.... 20 in a bout 7 weeks or so..... Yet I feel dead old. Shoot!

ODE

BC, We had a Apple IIe as well. Did you guys have a Nibble magazine subscription? Every issue had a section of code for a game or something. Our whole family would take turns typing in the code. eventually we would end up with a program that would sort out shower schedules at random, or that snake game where you would try and eat the dots and not hit yourself or the sides. Now that was cool!

BC
09-18-2000, 01:16 AM
John,

Yeah, my Dad used to keep copies of Nibble around the house. I think he actually ordered it direct from the US (since we lived in Hong Kong back then) and he liked to try out the programming stuff when I wasn't hogging it - I was only interested in games and nothing else (what else do you expect for a toddler? :D)

(edit)
Should also add as a side note, you can now play games like Snake on your mobiles.... It's amazing when you consider how far everything has come along in the last 15 years. (/edit)

Wrong!!!!! I AM SURPRISED!!!!! Just 19 ???!!!!!

Hats off to you!!!!! I wish I was half as smart as you... and I am nearly twice as old as you... I'm 33 :(

Guess that makes me <pecking away at calculator>... what's two times half ???... uh oh :( seems I am just a quarter as smart as you... and that's also due to the fact that you always have been helping me out here :)

Just goes to show that older ain't equal to smarter!!!!!

By the way, BC... how was that stage show this weekend? Can't remember the name now... see, am already gettin' senile :)

Learner, the concert I performed in was fantastic - for the classical music-ophiles out there, I performed the Rhapsody in Blue with the Monash Orchestra, and got a standing ovation. Yeeeeeeeeee-ha! :D

Afterwards, I went to the Post-Concert Party and had great fun.... Memories of drinking a lot, studying astrology with a few girls, getting 3 hours sleep, listening to musical bloopers.... Ahhhh, the life of an amateur musician ;) (and some other memories I dare not mention, as Matt would censor them! :D)

And yeah, most people are actually a bit surprised to find out my age. Quite frankly, my blunt response is : Age doesn't matter on the Net. It's how much you know and how much you help others to avoid the pitfalls. Enough said.

Unfortunately I didn't get the opportunity to tape it, as it was too hard and didn't have enough time. Oh well, I might get another opportunity before the end of the year... Fingers crossed.

Up in the heavens? Well, let's just say my girlfriend (who didn't attend the party) wasn't too particularly pleased when I told her all about the astrology readings *LOL*! But no, there wasn't any particular action afterwards (since we all knew each other pretty well, and it was just a single house and it wasn't mine, so I couldn't do *that* much! LOL) if that was what you were trying to imply *glare* :D

*lmao* yes I can actually. Ok here's the design... A background of deep blood red, with a freaky font like 'Singothic' or 'Dead Babies' <--- real fonts believe me! The header is big and probably in black and grey. Next we get some of the afore mentioned midgets, strip them down and leave them wearing nothing but little red devil horns. Placing them to the left and right of the header, they are reading books such as the Karma Sutra, and the Marque D' Sade, all with leering grins. A bit of drop shadow here and there and the rest writes itself. :)

There you go, a site to warm the heart and make you trust a brand name for sure!
