Has anyone here ever posted their own websites onto google's search engine without paying?

I used a bunch on META tags and the crawler seems to be unable to find my sites. :(

I entered these tags in roughly 4 months ago and i seriously think the crawler should have found it by now but i am not sure what is going on

Anyone know how to do it?

META Tags won't help you on google. While their is no absolute method, I would focus on generating incoming links, keywords in title, keywords in content, etc.. Google focuses on content, rather than simply some meta tag keywords.

In the end, build a nice site with good content, and it should attract the visitors.

Also, pay a visit to seochat.com, and do some reading.

I've never posted any sites to search engines but they usually find their way to the first page on their own.....

midPhase-Zak is correct though: Don't rely on META tags. They've been so abused over the last few years that few, if any SEs still use them for indexing.

How long have the sites been up? It varies as far as time....Quicker if you have external links to your site, longer if it's just stuck in some dusty corner of cyberspace.

"Long" is rather relative. It's been a long time since I opened my last Mountain Dew. This one is almost empty.

Get my meaning? A couple weeks? A month or two? A year?

A good start to getting listed in google is to submit your site to dmoz.org

I've found that one of the best ways to get indexed in google is to have incoming link(s) from well indexed site(s). I have a network of sites (with great google ranking) where I always insert cross-links between them. Whenever I add a new site to the network, the new site always gets picked up very quickly - within a few weeks.

Aside from that, once google has found you, CONTENT IS KING. As mentioned earlier, page titles, page content and keyword density can really work in your favor.

Submit your site to Google (http://www.google.com/addurl.html). And you'll get in at some point - unless that is the sites are using some of the tactics that Google disapproves of.

The last bunch of new sites I put up took about 4 months to get reliably placed in the index (although Google was screwing around with their algorithm earlier this year which may have slowed the process a bit).

You can also check Google's site for the possible reasons that you might not be in the index:

I love when I see someone that actually gives good advice.. :D

I am so glad that this was posted. We have been doing this for a long time and it has proven correct every time.

Just because you have a website you are not going to get in the search engines at any decent place. Links to your site are good but it takes so many to make a huge difference (don't even think about link farms either)

The is much more to SEO than most people think. Do you need meta tags of course you do. Meta tags are not just for the SE rankings and Yes google does not use the Meta keywords for ranking but MSN, Lycos and a lot of the others do.

You can do a lot of reading and do your best and get lucky or pay a professional to do it for you. Spend the time on what you do best and pay the people that do it for a living handle that aspect of your worries.

How long does it take to get into the SE's?? Most only a few days, Google we have been in within 3 weeks if everything is done correctly. :)

Read, read and then read some more. Learn what the engines want.

The way google is updating now, it's almost pointless to wait for dmoz to list you. Dmoz generally takes much longer. I don't submit my URL in their form, just generate a few strong links, and you may be up in a few days.

Dmoz isn't the backbone of much anymore, from what I can tell.

Except for the fact that dmoz hasn't updated their database in a long time. Much longer than the last time I opened up my can of soda. ;)

I've always had pretty good luck with google. They've indexed each site I've submitted within a month. Just make sure the content is there and do *not* spam their search engine. You should be listed in no time if you have the content.
