View Full Version : Cheap (but honest) ad-free host for online Résumé?

My friend already has a domain name, and a 1- or 2-page resume site that he can show to employers...

Now he just needs the cheapest possible host WITHOUT banner ads. Traffic and space requirements will be low. Nothing fancy. Guaranteed uptime is not required.

His only mail need is a single email address for his domain, that will just auto-forward. No actual mailbox needed. (I might set him up with zoneedit.com for that matter.)

But his ISP has no hosting, and I don't want to just price-shop and have him give his credit card to an unknown! So an honest, reputable, recommended company is my main goal. And did I say cheap? :)

Many thanks for any advice!

From browsing the forum today, I would say 1 and 1 handles the cheap part :) I have never dealt with them, so I can't vouch for the quality. Some people in that thread have complained about slow service.

What if a prospective employeer can't reach the site and your friend misses a job op?

Thanks--we'll check those out!

The cost is his call, but he already has a job, so paying for guaranteed uptime doesn't seem to interest him. And he'll pass the site on to people he's already in contact with--so no new contacts would be lost by downtime. And it sounds like he plans to show people the site pretty rarely--his job search is not an intensive goal.

Having said that, we'd definitely avoid any company known for a lot of downtime! It's just that 99.999% guaranteed isn't vital.

Take a look at www.enhancedhost.com for reliable and very affordable hosting. They have a yearly plan that would be perfect for your friend.

Enhancedhost does look good for those needs; a resume site should have VERY low data transfer, so 3 G should be more than enough.

I'd take a look at findmyhosting.com last time I looked there were plans that were $4.10 for a year.

I am sure you get what you pay for, but if you want it cheap and ad free you'll probably find the best deal there.

I know I can't compete with $4.10 on a price basis.

Thanks,
Ben

Probably he could add "Not that cheap" :)
However, there are plenty of plans that will match your criteria, and perhaps posting this add into the request forum will be another good ideea (i take this one as beeing the 1st one).
Good luck in finding the host you (your friend) need(s). :)

Unless you friend is in the tech business I would strongly suggest that he NOT put his resume on the net. I do not work as a Career Counselor now but I used to. The horror stories of web resumes are legion. Please do not put any personal contact info. on the web. Bad move. The other thing that people don't realize is that once your resume is on the web you lose control of it. There are bots out there that will track it down, stick it in a database, and then their owners try to sell it to unsuspecting businesses. Then three months later you boss sees it from some headhunter and your in deep doo doo. Remember this: The web is a public forum. It is a public forum. It is a public forum. Say it after me. Don't put any information out there that you don't want everyone to know about, unless you have it secured.

Some words from the wise.

Thanks for the advice--we'll check those out!

I'd be interested in knowing more about the risks--I don't understand them as much. I run a home business (tech field) and thus my contact info is of necessity on the Web. And in my friend's case, he is considering a change to a career in which people will need to see what he looks like before they hire him for a part--which can't be done in a phone call. (Thus his site won't be quite the traditional résumé.) He's also not entirely at risk if his employer finds out--because it's a different industry altogether, and he could potentially take parts on the side without quitting.

The risk of ID theft is clear--certainly neither he nor I would ever post full info like SSN! What other risks are you talking about?

Thanks!

He can always password protect his site. I'm sure that will stop most of the potential problems. When he gives someone the site info he just gives them the log in info also.

I know this sounds off topic but how can they afford providing services for $4 per year? I mean it takes time to set up the account and answer questions.
even $4 per month sounds low.
