now i plan to run hosting business i know very little about server
and i have come in this site many time and also cobalt.com
i have some question about RaQ4
1. how much it is?? (i mail to them but no answer)
2. is it better to set my own server coz i can setup the feature that i want EX.. harddisk space, ram or CPU (i look at the feature of RaQ4 i think it quite low and out of date)
3. if i buy RaQ4 and want to be reseller ... i have to use control panel from other company right? or i can't??
4. compare with Linux and NT is it easy to hack?
5. if i setup my own server is it hard for install the control panel or all the program that i want by myself (i don't know anything about setup the related program)
6. in your opinion, i should use dedicate server or buy it my own?
thank all
Aloha
well this should help
1. do not buy one go to rackshack.net and get a server there
if you buy a raq you still have to colo it and stuff if you were to buy a box get a puter like a dell app server or other good 1u case that can run dual pIII and over a gig of ram and scsi drives
2. you can do what you want to the os etc... if you are renting a complete server but you crash it you fix it
3. hmm well you could reformat and reinstall on a raq but why ??? just get a plesk box or other cp box on a way better machine so just use the raq CP the box is nto worht pooring tons into
4. anybox can get hacked people will tellyou both ways a good secure system is a good secure system both OS's have there pros and cons and you must keep up with patches etc.. for both
5. if you do not have a clue it may be dificult most places will install this for you for a fee or part of package preinstalled
6. to start out dont buy it unless you know you are going to need certain power of stuff or somethign specila
basic stuff get a raq at rackshack or start reselling on a resellers account till you know more and have customers.
best of luck

Someone else said this, I can't recall who or I'd give them credit...
If you knew nothing about cars, would you open up an automotive repair shop? You may want to consider reselling. Lower monthly outlay and a more experienced host handles all the dirty stuff.

They'd probably email you back this URL which is on their site:
http://www.cobalt.com/products/raq/howtobuy.html
2. is it better to set my own server coz i can setup the feature that i want EX.. harddisk space, ram or CPU (i look at the feature of RaQ4 i think it quite low and out of date)
Well, at least the RaQ will have a pretty easy to use admin control panel. You didn't seem to express that you had knowledge about setting servers up, etc. If you won't consider being a reseller, then I don't think I'd suggest starting you at the command line.
3. if i buy RaQ4 and want to be reseller ... i have to use control panel from other company right? or i can't??
I'm not sure what you mean, it seems conflicting. If you buy a RaQ, then you wouldn't be a reseller, you'd use the server to set up accounts, etc. It makes little to absolutely no sense to spend money on a RaQ server only to wipe it and put on another control panel (IMHO).
4. compare with Linux and NT is it easy to hack?
I won't pretend to know which distro of linux is the least easy to hack, nor if NT is any better or worse than the RaQs. NT has had exploits that have been nasty and so has various programs on linux servers.
The RaQs run a modified RedHat Linux, and one of shortcomings of this is that you can't just update apache when a bug is fixed. It might take down the whole server or at least the admin control panel. Wait times on Cobalt patches fustrate people and every now and then a 'patch' royally floggs the box. Not the way you want to fix things, but my suggestion is to educate yourself, read up on it, check mailing lists and forums before you do major updates, etc.
5. if i setup my own server is it hard for install the control panel or all the program that i want by myself (i don't know anything about setup the related program)
Well, it certainly makes it more difficult if you don't know the first thing about it. Luckily some CP's include installation, or you can generally pay the company to do the install (or pay an admin to do it).
6. in your opinion, i should use dedicate server or buy it my own?
In my opinion, you should consider reselling. If you ignore this advice, then I suggest you lease a managed server (they handle all the dirty stuff), or at least lease a server somewhere that provides support for new linux users.
