Too many new standards with televisions and media playing! But cool nonetheless.

Now we're getting somewhere...

Wonder how much bandwidth is required for transmitting this?

hehe... I read this a fwe weeks ago... It's quite interesting how people can get sick from watching it :)

A good indicator...
Recording the massive amounts of data needed to produce UHDV definition also posed a problem for NHK. Its engineers were originally only able to make 34 seconds' worth of recording. They have now built a disc recorder system made up of 16 HDTV recorder units with a capacity of about 3.5 terabytes, allowing them to shoot 18 minutes of UHDV footage.

about 1GB per second, or 8000mbps hmm.

I dont think they will be able to compress it either, that would defeat the point wouldnt it?

Well 100 meg Zip Disks and black and white TV's were amazing devices once too. :) They'll figure it out.

I hope they get this off the ground down the line somewhere - exciting stuff.

Im sure there they could develop a lossless compression codec

but just think about that for a second... 1gbps a second! thats alot of throughput flowing...

and thats 1 gigabyte, not one gigabit

Wow, impressive.

As technology advances, many other things will get cheaper and cheaper...so hopefully bandwidth would be cheaper, to suite that.

I dont think we need to worry about the bandwidth, but they need to be able to store whole videos

from that a 2 1/2 hour film would take up approx 21TB of space. Its going to be a long time until there is anything you can fit that onto. I would estimate 10-15 years, possibly longer. :(

Am I the only one who thinks that there is nothing wrong with my RCA analog TV set and sees this whole mandatory switchover to HDTV as nothing more than an excuse to sell us new TVs all over again? Maybe somehow Pam Anderson's boobs do indeed appear even bigger and more sucullent on an HDTV than on a "flat" CRT tube TV. But I doubt it.

HDTV... I'm glad I finally figured out what this is. WB36[.com] in Atlanta has been broadcasting in HDTV since earlier this year. I haven't noticed too much of a difference other than a much clearer picture.

It actually makes me want to stick to the tv even longer. :)

You wouldn't notice much of a difference -- unless you have an HD tuner. Then you'd crap your pants at the difference.

I have seen HDTV at store demos. And quite honestly, I am not really all that excited. Yeah, it is a little bit better. There are more options. But who cares? I spend maybe 10 hours a week in front of the TV. I am too busy to stare into a little box and watch things happen. TVs turn people into lazy sacks of crap. Instead of going skydiving, we watch other people skydive. Instead of going and getting the real news from independent sources, we watch corporate news that has been watered down for everyone to undertsand.

HDTV is like one of those couch potato gadgets. And I can't understand why we *have* to switch to HDTV by 2006(?). There is NOTHING wrong with our current TVs. We have lived with them for several decades, what is the reason to change? What does HDTV do that is so wonderful that everyone should be forced to get one?

Its simple. There is nothing wonderful about it. They just want us to buy new TVs all over again. Ha! Imagine that!
