View Full Version : Delicated.. what should I do
vince2874 10-09-2003, 08:50 AM Hi,
anyone can tell me if I get a delicated server, what are the things I should set up? will the host set up for me or what? thanks..
eddy2099 10-09-2003, 09:32 AM Depends if it is fully managed or otherwise. To the minimum, they will set up the hardware, any control panels and the connection so you can log in into the machine.
You will need to set up the DNS, Hosting Accounts and so on. If you do not request for a control panel, you might have to install email server, web server, ftp server and so on.
If you are planning to get a dedicated server, it is best to get a good administration book. If it is Linux get a linux administration book and if it is windows a windows administration book.
vince2874 10-09-2003, 09:42 AM Hi eddy2099,
I planned to get a delicated (unmanaged) server but I am a newbie.. thanks for your comments.
So do the host help us protect from ddos or whatever attacks?
eddy2099 10-09-2003, 09:44 AM If it is unmanaged then no, the host will only set up the hardware and add your login details so you can log into the server and that is about it. The only other support would be if the hardware breaks down, they will replace it.
Beyond that, you are on your own. You will need to do your patches, upgrades and security updates which would include firewalls, closing blocks and all those.
By the way, if you are new to this, do not go unmanaged or else you just have nightmares and sleepless nights for as long as you have the server. It is not easy to manage if you do not know what you are doing.
vince2874 10-09-2003, 10:41 AM ohh.. so do you have any good and affordable managed server to recommended?
ExlHost-Mike 10-09-2003, 10:46 AM Take a look at http://servermatrix.com i got one server with them and the support is good..
vince2874 10-09-2003, 11:11 AM is celeron 1.4 enough?
centrahost 10-09-2003, 11:13 AM Try looking in the WHT Advertising Forum under Dedicated Offers, or asking in the Dedicated Server forum here at WHT.
eddy2099 10-09-2003, 12:20 PM What do you intend to use the server for ? How active are your sites ?
By the way, Servermatrix basic plans are not fully managed but they will take care of kernel and security patches. You can opt for them to install scripts and firewall for you for an extra charge or you could opt for a higher managed plan which would include all that for you.
vince2874 10-09-2003, 12:50 PM eddy2099,
using for penpals and forum website, if get active I think will be 50-60 users online at the same time.. so celeron is ok or too slow?
Chicken 10-09-2003, 12:57 PM It's impossible to know for sure, but based on 50-60 users on a well written forum, it should be more than enough for quite some time. For example, my site is powered by a Celeron 1.3 GHZ, 1GB of RAM and with about that many users on, it's been fine.
The 20 current users are causing load averages: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
vince2874 10-10-2003, 05:47 AM ok thanks for the advice!
coight 10-10-2003, 05:51 AM And I believe your after a dedicated ;)
Mark_TVI 10-10-2003, 09:31 AM ServInt (http://www.servint.com) has fully managed servers with 24/7 tech support. I usually get email responses and solutions within 30 minutes for any issues, if that's not quick enough you can ring them up on the phone day or night and get immediate action.
If you're new to this, they would be a great choice...

servint have Virtual private server plans, what is the different between that and a delicated?

No, he is after delicated.
sprintserve 10-10-2003, 08:13 PM a VPS basically is one huge server which is still shared by a number of clients. However it uses software to create a "virtual environment" that makes it look like you are having a dedicated server (with some limits on resources). However you can have almost the full flexibility of being able to install your own software and do pretty much most things you can do in a root environment.
A dedicated however on the other hand really means that that server is meant just for you, and there would be no other people sharing that server with you.
eddy2099 10-10-2003, 10:17 PM A VPS offers you the benefit of a root access like the dedicated server and allows you to install almost anything on it (provided it does not break any TOS/AUP) and it is usually managed and cost less than a full fledge managed server.
It however is not as full powered as full dedicated server but it sure makes it a great learning environment.
vince2874 10-11-2003, 02:17 AM oic.. so a VPS is not much different from a shared server except you have root access... I think that won't be suitable for me.
sprintserve 10-11-2003, 02:31 AM Actually VPS is more akin to dedicated servers than shared server, since you pretty much manage your own "virtual environment" just like how you would in a dedicated.
Daryl 10-11-2003, 12:25 PM I think this has been posted int he wrong forum :)
You should maybe post dedicated server queries in the Dedicated Server forum....:)
sprintserve 10-11-2003, 12:31 PM Doesn't really matter. We help when there's help to be rendered, and the moderators can decide if they wish to move it or not.
I think a VDS might actually be more suitable as going from your specs it might be cheaper and it you find it works well you can upgrade to a better machine later. Also things like OS reloads can be done easier if needed.
